Quick fix: load the fail-safe settings in the bios.
MS KB articles refer to a long and difficult troubleshooting process for
this particular error message which does work, but this is by far the
easiest fix. Most often (in my experience, anyhow) this is due to some
conflict between window's power management and the bios' power management.
The other major cause of this error is some conflict with a piece of add-on
hardware. If resetting the bios does not fix the problem, try building the
machine using only "vanilla" components (eg one hard drive, one cd-rom
drive, one stick of memory, onboard video only if you have it, no additional
cards - sound, modem, network, etc etc). Then once it's built add things one
by one and then stop when something breaks.
Mismatched memory can also chuck up this error.
