Help please, after latest updates Notepad does not work correctly

Yesterday I did an update, latest 8 critical updates, and now notepad
won't open automatically. What I mean is that notepad can be opened
and text files can be opened thru it but if I'm in explorer and I
double click,or right click choose open,on a txt file nothing happens.
I also installed a camera about the same time as well, but I've since
uninstalled that and notepad still doesn't respond correctly. Any help
appreciated.

Right click the .txt file in Explorer and choose "open with". Choose to
open with notepad and put a check mark before "always use this program for
this type file?.

None of this helped but after perusing the registry I found it was
telling windows to look for notepad in the win32 directory. When I
looked,there was indeed a notepad.exe in that dir. but it wasn't a
real one. So a little editing and alls well again. At least until
something else goes wrong with what I believe to be the most buggy
Microsoft product yet.

For some reason the system likes to have two copies of notepad.exe - one
in C:\Windows and one in C:\Windows\system32 (which I presume is what
you are referring to as win32 - if there is a separate win32 folder,
other than it having been chosen as alternative to C:\windows, it does
not belong )

One of them is used in the shortcut in the Start - All Programs,. . .
the other in file associations. Something around seems to be deleting
one of them.
