Help! Outlook 2002 upgrade has nuked part of my Contact info

J

Jeffrey Atkin

I hope someone can help me.
HISTORY: I just upgraded to Outlook 2002 from Outlook
2000. Upgrade went fine. Then on restart Outlook said my
pst file had errors. I ran scanpst.exe as the help file
said i should. Scanpst found errors w/ the pst which it
then fixed. (I did make a .bak file backup of this file).

Then I started Outlook. No problems.

PROBLEM: I can SEE (and can highlight and copy) the email
addresses, web site, etc. in the multiple address card
view. However, once I open the individual address card all
the email addresses are gone. Also, when I try to address
an email, outlook doesn't recognize the contact name. When
I try to see the addresses the names are there but in the
Properties dialog box everything else is gone. I am also
getting an error in the properties dialog box
saying, "error: An invalid entryID was passed in"

SOLUTIONS TRIED: I figured maybe the View is wrong. So I
tried to export the Contacts as a pst and as an excel
file. Neither the File As nor email nor website comes
across in the exporting activity.

I am trying to figure out how to use the .bak file to
export the contacts from that file but outlook won't allow
me to open that file from Import/Export.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP! It would take days and days to
update the contacts - i must have 1000 or so....

Thanks,
jsa

It is always recommended that you back up your data before doing an upgrade
installation. Did you?

Jeffrey Atkin

(sorry for the long answer below)

Yes I've backed up, multiple times on HD and CDRW before
the upgrade. However, none of the backups (that worked w/
Outlook2000) are considered valid either by Outlook2002 or
even by outlook2000 on another machine. Both diff versions
of outlook claim that the original files have problems and
have to be fixed w/ scanpst.exe. Once scanpst.exe works
its magic the emails are gone.

I've figured out a workaround w/ an outlook2002 file from
a work computer that was not quite up to date. However,
I've been able to piece together which addresses i was
missing.

So I've taken those addresses, copied them into
OutlookTodayPersonalFolders and am now trying to figure
out how to delete the original Contacts folder completely.
Outlook won't allow me to do that even if I choose to
remove Contacts from "view or change existing directories"
in the Tools>Email Accts dialog box.

MY Biggest concern is that the whole file is corrupt but
the only evidence I've seen is recurring reminders coming
up before their time (on logging in again to Out2002) and
this email oddity.

FINALLY, it may be that a disk defragmentation process
that i did yesterday may have added additional
uncertainty. However, the whole reason i upgraded to 2002
was because i was getting quirky stuff w/ outlook.

One more thing: my workaround (reconstructing the pst file
from its components) doesnt work: When I try to
copy, export to new pst,or move the messages/folders in the
inbox i get the error message, "cannot complete the
operation. One or more of the parameters is not valid"

ARGH!

Is there anyone who is an outlook expert who would be
willing to talk with me on the phone? at this point i'm
willing to pay - this is really hurting...

Sounds like these PST files were already corrupt then. The only other
supported repair option I know is to keep alternating the Inbox Repair Tool
with a scandisk utility until no more error messages are received. There may
be some third party repair options listed here:

Thank you Russ. i've tried that approach and so far, no
help because scanpst doesn't return any more errors and
chkdsk (win2000) has already checked the disk apparently
no errors.

thanks for your attention. any more ideas i'd love to hear
them.
