I was trying to help someone over the phone, and the description of
their Network Connections control panel window is very different from
what I see on my computers.
Can anyone explain why -- or how to get their behavior to be "normal"
(i.e. like mine)?
When I look at the Network Connections control panel window, I see
(among other things) an icon with three lines next to it:
line 1: title (Local Area Connection)
line 2: status (e.g. Network cable unplugged; Disabled; Acquiring
network address; Connected)
line 3: name of controller (e.g. Intel...; Broadcom...)
When they look at the same icon in the Network Connections control
panel window, they see only line 1 (title).
Is the difference in behavior related to that fact that I have a
different internet connection: cable v. DSL modem?
I would not think that makes a difference in the appearance of lines 2
and 3 in the Network Connection control panel. But who knows?!
Both computers (theirs and mine) are from the same manufacturer. Both
computers have WinXP Pro SP2. Both computers have "about the same"
updates; they might differ by a couple weeks.
