Help Needed - Windows XP to Internet

P

Pete Coppola

I ran into a problem....

I installed Windows XP Pro on a computer I purchased from
my office. Everything runs fine. I installed a wireless
USB antenna to connect this computer to my wireless
router. Everything works fine. I was surfing the net
etc.

I go on-line to the Windows XP update website to get the
XP all updated and they had a new driver for my Netgear
wireless device...so I installed it.

Well it didn't work and I lost wireless connectivity so I
restored the old driver and got my wireless connectivity
back... good signal and it sees the router.

However, now Internet Explorer cannot find my internet
connection on the wireless lan. I checked my settings
and under the LAN menu, I have "find connection
automatically" checked. What else am I missing. It was
working fine before the Windows Driver Update and I did
go and restore the old driver and the connectivity came
back.

Also, my other computers are XP Home and this one is XP
Pro. When I went to access the XP Pro computer of the
Miscrosoft Network with one of my other computers over
the wireless network, the XP Pro computer asked for a
password. How can I get rid of that?

Any help is appreciated.

Have a good night and hopefully I'll have an answer in
the morning.

Regards,

Hi,

For problem #1

1)I you go into a DOS shell and type "ipconfig /all" do
you have a valid I.P address (probably 192.168.0.x if you
are using Internet connection Sharing) plus address for
gateway, dns .... ?

2) Are you using ZoneAlarm ? Try disabling it and see if
that helps. If ZoneAlarm is running on the computer which
directly connects to the Internet then make sure a setting
(forget which menu) 'This computer is a ICS gateway' is
enabled.

3) Can you ping any web addresses from DOS (i.e. ping
www.microsoft.com)

4) Make sure that XPs inbuilt firewall is not enabled
(check properties of network card)

For Problem #2

1) Create the same username on each computer with the same
password

2) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;318030&Product=winxp

3)http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?

Good luck !
