Help me

S

Sara

I shut down my computer last night, and when I started it
up again, all that came up after the Dell logo was a black
screen with this at the bottom:

Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <Windows 2000 root>\System32\
Ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

When I put in my Windows 2000 CD, nothing happens. Is my
hard drive corrupt, and are all my files lost? My
warranty is up on the PC, but it is only 2 years old!

Someone please help me.

Sara,

I should read carefully this Microsoft's online text to recover your system
boot (and the lost file). There, it will be described a few recovering and
repairing sceneries:

Windows 2000 - Chapter 13 - Repair, Recovery, and Restore
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...ows2000serv/reskit/serverop/part3/sopch13.asp

I used it before as reference and I recovered my system. After solving my
problem, I always keep with me a couple of updated Emergency Repair Disks
for my servers and workstations. I do not know if you have one, but the
Microsoft's online text is very helpfull.

Good Luck,

try running the repair function of W2K OR XP for that
matter.
Press f12 while the machine is booting up chose to boot
off the CD, press the space bar as the system boots up.
that will take you into the repair utility. Chose to re-
install first and the second time it asks you what you
wnat to do chose R. you have to make sure you chose re-
install the first time you go through the wizards and
chose repair the next time.
