Help: Isass.exe - System Error

My father has a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop. It was experiencing
intermittent lock-ups, so I gave it to the IT guy at work who
reinstalled XP Pro on it. Now it gets an error on bootup that says:

Isass.exe - System Error
An invalid parameter was passed to a service or funtion

I cannot boot it in safe mode, either. Can someone help?
