Help--IE 6 won't open

D

Da5id

Several weeks ago I noticed that all of the buttons,
animations, and some images in my Yahoo DSL browser would
not work. Tech support at Yahoo said it was an Internet
Explorer/script (Java, VBS, other?) issue. Now Internet
Explorer will not open at all. When I click on the icon
on my desktop absolutely nothing happens -- no error
messages, no hard drive thrashing, no nothing. The
engine itself is working inasmuch as I can utilize the
MSN browser, the crippled form of the Yahoo browser, and
Crazy Browser. I have tried the following:

CHKDSK

DEFRAG

Virus check -- MicroTrend, Norton, AVG, and others

Double checked Zone Alarm Pro, including attempting to
start with firewall disabled

Spyware and Adware scan with four different programs and
removed all entries.

Tried different combinations of "Set Program Access and
Defaults"

Successfully uninstalled and reinstalled Internet
Explorer version 6 -- (in other words I uninstalled
Internet Explorer from Ad/Remove Programs, downloaded the
set up and install files for a full Internet Explorer
version 6 install, performed the install with no error
messages (although the download was very short because
the install program recognized that I needed few, if any
files) and got a brand-new different and shiny Internet
Explorer icon on my desktop. That's the one that does
nothing. Also whenever a program tries to open
the "default browser" nothing happens.

Related Issue: Some Advertisements and Buttons in Web
Pages are missing across browser platforms, i.e.,
Netscape and Opera.

System:
Windows XP operating system
HP Intel P-4 1.6 MHz
1 GIG DDR memory
1.5 Mb ADSL SBC Yahoo Internet connection

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

First of all, you can't uninstall IE6 on WinXP. If somehow you managed, you
screwed up the computer.

XP

Also, see Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search
Engines

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Hi,
Many things to try in this article:
276393 - Understanding and Troubleshooting Unrecoverable Errors (Faults) in
Internet Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=276393

Try... From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third
party
browser extensions." If that makes a difference, try BHODemon 1.0 from
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm to ID and disable BHOs.

Try disabling any other programs that might be interfering with IE such as
AV, security, firewall, Yahoo companion, popup blockers, etc

Hope this helps,
Don

Frank, I followed your instructions
(http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm) through this
point:

Recommended Minimal Security Settings
Close all instances of Internet Explorer and Outlook
Express
Control Panel | Internet Options | Click on
the "Security" tab
Highlight the "Internet" icon, click "Custom Level"
"Download signed ActiveX scripts" = Prompt
"Download unsigned ActiveX scripts = Disable
"Initialize and script ActiveX not marked as safe" =
Disable
"Installation of Desktop items" = Prompt
"Launching programs and files in a IFRAME" = Prompt

And, Don, I followed your instructions through this
point:

Try... From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced
uncheck "Enable third party browser extensions." If that
makes a difference

A parenthetical next to be "third party browser
extensions" check box requires a computer restart. After
that, Windows Internet Explorer now works. Thank you
very much.
