I just performed a system restore of my dell laptop yesterday and it seemed
to work beautifully. The network speed was awesome, reinstalled files are
great...no worries. However, today upon starting up my laptop, the following
message popped up eight times "Generic Host process for Win32 Services
encountered a problem and need to close" - I closed out each message and sent
the subsequent error reports AND THEN I got "The instruction at "0x00aa96bc"
referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written.
immediately. This error message has been popping up every 2 minutes, and it's
driving me nuts!! And to top it off, my internet connection is extremely slow
now, even at 54mbps! What is going on? I'm ready to ditch this whole thing
and go to a Mac....argh!

Need to have a better idea of what's actually running. Process Explorer
will help you with this.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx

What did the system restore involve? Was it a clean install, or did it
reuse your old data, caches, temp folders, etc?

Get and run ccleaner, www.ccleaner.com . Let it clear out the temp folders
and browser caches. Then, go to the Trend Micro site and run Housecall.. .
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (note, no www in the URL).

Try one (or both) of these:

Solution to try (1):

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix Windows Installer, fix Windows Update, and all the
Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".
Then click "GO"

Solution to try (2):

1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by
cutting/pasting as directed.)

- Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose
Yes when you are prompted.
- Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
window:

I'm not sure of what to look for using the Process explorer...but I downloaded it. I also ran the ccleaner and the Housecall. Nothing has changed, though...

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

I ran solution #2, however, I got a message "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already installed." Also, I don't understand what you mean by using the command switch "/wuforce". I rebooted the system after it finished running the register, and tried to download the update v.3 file, but I got the above message, and I downloaded the patch as per your suggestion. Upon rebooting my laptop, still no change...I have stopped responding to the error messages and have been moving them around my screen in order to work.

I ran into the same problem, and I found it was due to a "Windows
Image Acquisition (WIA)" service. I disabled it under Adminstrative
Tools->Services and the problem went away. Not sure if this will
cause problems if your laptop requires image acquisition services.

Hi,

I also recently performed a system restore and have the same problem. I
tried the fix from (e-mail address removed) and the Dial-A-Fix suggested by Shenan
Stanley. No changes. I considered reinstalling XP but was hoping that there
were other options. I thought the problem was associatited with Norton Ghost
software because the initial reseason I did the restore centered on
performance issues that would arise when reminder window would appear to tell
me that the trial period had expired. (This problem arose well after the
expiration notices started appearing.)

In addition to the fixes mentioned above, I also ran the restore two
different times to 2 different points, reinstalled McAfee and performed a
scan, I deleted Ghost (when I did this I lost restore points), and ran the
error checker (this found two bad clusters, but did not fix the problem).

I did not try solution #2 from Shenan Stanley as it did not work for MJ.

For me this message comes first: svchost.exe-Application Error
The instriction at 0x71a58c02 referenced memory at 0x000084ca

Then after open my user account I get the Generic Host Process for Win32
Services message: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a
problem and needed to close.

Like MJ, I have taken to moving the message windows around the screen. If I
respond to them I experience problems and can lose my wireless internet
connection.

Any additional help is appreciated.

Bob
