Help!!! Crashing XP

Jeff in Miami

For the last few days my Windows XP Home edition has been
crashing repeatedly and I don't know what's going on or
what to do.

Here's what happens:
1) When I sign on I get warning saying "REGISTRY
RECOVERY" telling me that the computer has successfully
retrieve and alternate copy.

2) The computer works for a short period, then suddenly
it crashes. I get a blue screen telling me to restart or
remove my anti-virus definitions.

and then it says

STOP:0x00000023
(0x000E0100,0xF9F199c,0xfp1965c,0xb6003450)

FASTFAT.SYS - ADDRESS ... and more numbers and letters.

Please advise.

The first thing to try is scan for viruses making sure
you have the latest definition updates.

Otherwise remove any software/harware that was loaded
just prior to the crash.

Thanks... I have already scanned and updated and checked
for Sasser. Everything seems clear.

I don't think I've installed any new software recently.

Jeff, Hi, I am no Windoze expert (being more of a Macuser :) ) but cam
to this forum because my very lightly used IBM Thinkpad with X
Professional (worst machine I ever bought except for some Toshib
laptops 7 years ago) has started crashing with an 0x00000023 error an
then saying there is no hard disk installed.

In either case, I did a search and stumbled upon your query. In doing
quick search I see that this same code was used in Windows 2000 as
known MS Windows 2000 bug which can be read about a
http://tinyurl.com/ysvwl

I am not sure if XP has the same bugs or if the same error code i
being used to signify some different problem in XP than in 2000, but
hope the above link may help you in your search.

What annoys me with the ThinkPad is that it is VERY lightly used, ha
no problems shown with Norton and disk utilities, yet will have a har
crash every few hours and refuse to boot up with a no hard disk foun
error. Leaving it off and turning it back on has it running again unti
the next hard crash. I hate it. (2 months ago the display started goin
dead unless it was slightly pressed on the right upper corner...so yo
typed with one hand and used the other hand to ensure the displa
stayed lit. Amazing. Pathetic machine).

I hate it even more that even when it boots up with a PCMCIA FireWir
card I cannot get it to recognize an external hard disk nor does X
recognize an external hard disk on the USB port so I cannot even bac
up my data. I will never buy an IBM Thinkpad again. Anyway, so much fo
my gripes, your problem may be different from mine but I hope the abov
URL helps - I get the following error codes....

*** STOP: 0x00000023 (0x000E0100, 0xF86E7460, )xF86E7160, 0x80548EB9)

Anyone have any ideas on these? Thanks.
