HELP! Can't record to dvd!

I created a project in MM2 and saved it in dv-avi. It seemed like it saved,
I actually found it when i went to -my documents and found where I saved
it.(I could also play it on my window media player.) Then when I went to
sonic mydvd to record to dvd, I tried to get the file and nothing would open!
I have 1.5 days to figure this out! Any ideas? Thank you!

It sounds like you've taken the right steps but lets just double check.
After creating your project, you did a "Save Movie As" a DV-AVI, correct?
Then you went to MyDVD and imported your movie (or tried). I have version 4.5
so I go to "Create or Edit and Existing DVD project". Then I choose "Get
Movies". Then I burn. Pretty simple.

If you didn't do those steps, tell us exactly what you did.

I did do all of the steps you mentioned. I have mydvd 6.1 - it says to Burn
image saved on computer to disk. When it has me choose the location, I go to
the folder and it is empty. Thanks for your help - I appreciate it!

What folder are you going to? I'm not quite sure what you mean there. If you
have imported your DV-AVI movie into MyDVD, when you go to burn, you should
choose your DVD writer. Did you actually import the DV-AVI? Or is that the
sticking point. You have to import, then burn.

These are the basic steps for burning a DVD.

1-Edit movie in MM2 and "Save Movie As" a DV-AVI file.
2-Open MyDVD, create new or edit existing DVD project.
3-Import Movie(S), ie DV-AVI clips
4-Burn - choose location, either hard drive (to burn DVD files) or Disk
Drive (DVD burner).

It sounds like what you may be doing is choosing the option which searches
out all of the VOB files, etc. that would be on your PC already for a
particular DVD. You would have these files if, for example, you ripped a
commercial DVD and had the files stored somewhere. Don't try to burn images
because you don't have any. All you have is a DV-AVI file.

Ok, I dont have v6.1, I have v4.5 so I'll tell you what I do.You'll have to
apply it to the current version. When I first open MyDVD, there is a choice
of options. I choose "create or edit an existing DVD project". Then I get an
empty DVD project. On the left side of the screen there is an option "get
movie". I click that and browse for my DV-AVI files. Once the movie imports,
I get an icon on the screen which is the menu screen. The more movies I
"get", the more icons/chapters I will have. Then on the bottom I click on
Burn. Its that simple. However I don't know how different the versions are,
so just follow the process. I think you just need to choose the right option
when starting MyDVD.

OK -- I got it imported (THANK YOU!) but now it is saying no valid recordable
device was detected! I am an obvious beginner, but do I need something
special on my computer to record dvd's? I have a Toshiba satellite laptop.
I thought it could record dvds - it has a dvd rom/cd rewritable drive?! I am
frustrated!! Any advice?

oooh, it looks like you are still up the creek. "it has a dvd rom/cd
rewritable drive" means you only have DVD play capability but CD-RW
capability. You cannot burn a DVD. What you can do is choose to burn a VCD.
Which will play in players that support VCDs. At the bottom of the screen in
v4.5 is a drop down box for either DVD or VCD. After importing your movie, it
should tell you how much space has been used up by the project (out of 4.7GB
potential). Either change it to VCD in the drop down, or go out and get a DVD
burner. They have really bottomed out in price. The new dual layer burners
(2x as much space) are cheaper than what I bought my external burner for a
year ago. You can get an internal one for less than $100.

I have a DVD burner and a stack of blank DVD's waiting for some DV
footage I shot last summer. Since picture quality isn't exactly an
issue, is there any advantage to burning the disk in DVD (MPEG2). If I
burned my AVI in MPEG1, I could get so much more data. My idea is to
convert the avi files into MPEG1, then burn them onto a blank DVD, and
create a sort of supersized VCD. (I have a DVD player which will play
VCD's.) Is this doable? If so, is it a bad idea?

Hi FatKat; you should have started a new thread, but maybe i have an answer.
MPEG1 is the format for a VCD, while MPEG2 is the format for a DVD. The
MPEG2
will have a width and height of 720 x 480 pixels....whereas the MPEG1 will
be at
352 x 240 pixels. So, yes you will have a great reduction in quality but
more data. I
don't think the trade off makes for a smart idea! he he he You can always
get up and
put in another DVD into the player, but blurry video is forever! he he he
