Help! Canon printer will not re-install

Guest

I have a Canon ip8500. I have enabled it to print on cd. Has worked fine for many months. Recently, I disconnected the printer for 3 months from the CPU. When I reconnected it, Windows xp (home) says it finds new unknown usb hardware. It will not let me install the printer driver (from the original Canon cd). The install start but aborts at the 60% level (registering printer, creating folder...). The same thing happens with the driver that I downloaded from Canon's site. I have gone into "printers and faxes" and deleted the printer. Is there some other driver file I need to delete before I can the printer driver re-installed? I'm stumped. Any help is apreciated.

This kind of situation usually gets more involved than this, but
before I make things too complicated, along with deleting the printer
in the Printers and Faxes window, you also need to go into File ->
Server Properties -> Drivers Tab and remove the driver itself. Try
doing that first. Otherwise it might require registry editing. You
should also check the Knowledge Base on Canon's website.

Also check that your cable is not damaged and that you're plugging it
into the same USB port - lately I've seen some USB devices that have
problems if you plug it into a different port than it was installed
on.

I did that and still cannot install the driver.

I had thought of deleting all references to Pixma8500 in the registry. Is
that the route to go?

Useless!

Oops, I have no idea which of the 6 USB ports it was in. Any suggestions as
to how to treat this as a totally new install.?

Thanks for your help.

Isn't there a program on XP called System Restore
where you can pick a date when evrything was working
and use that to fix it\?

I did a system restore from a date 4 months prior. No success.

In addition to the advice below, you may now need to clear all references to
the printer in the registry (as you suggested) but make sure you get a good
registry backup first.
Also, when you install the printer make sure you do not connect it to the PC
until the installer tells you to.

OK, stupid point I know, but I had a sim problem with the Canon CP200. What finally worked was to have the printer connected AND turned ON. XP then noted a new device and after I pointed it to the CD drive it installed the driver. But the on-cd installation prog would NOT install it!

Did you download the correct driver that would enable CD printing?
If you did look in explorer for a BJ printer folder and delete it also delete any Windows temp files.
Should work .

After you delete the printer do a complete power off shut down. Then
try again. Maybe that will work. Report back either way.

Hello to all,

I lent the printer to a friend who installed it without any problem from the
Canon CD. Long story short, I am going to reformat my c drive to totally
clean my computer and then reinstall printer. My computer is 2 years old so
it probably time to start fresh anyway. I have a long day ahead of me. I
have tried most of the suggestions offerred here with no luck. I thank you
all, but, I have wasted enough time on this printer already so, here's
hoping reformat is the way to go.
