heavy cpu-load, but only from external traffic

Something isn't right!

The program that generates traffic uses about 10 percent-units per 100
kB/s (so about 100% for 1 MB/s).
The applications I'm talking about are mainly DC++, WinSCP and various
FTP clients.

The first thing that comes to mind is ofcourse "get a better NIC
without the Realtek crab on it!".

But what's weird is that when I copy files on my LAN (about 20 MB/s)
there is no load.

I've gotten the same results with a D-Link DFE-530TX and a HP NC3120
(Intel-based 10/100 card).

1 MB/Sec = 80Mb/Sec, which would be 80% of a 100Mb connection. Dependiing on
what you are counting (actual data on the wire or file sizes), if you can
get any computer to transfer data that fast, I wouldn't complain. If you
have calculated this by dividing the file size by the transfer time, you
need to add about 15% for TCP overhead and some more for SMB overhead.
Sounds to me like you're getting your money's worth.

Sorry, disregard my last post. Must have been asleep - or maybe using the
new math. 1MB = 8Mb, not 80.
