Network not connecting

I have been struggling with getting a friend's computer up and running again
after viruses and spyware. Finally got things stable, clean, and all the
updates loaded (XP SP2). For a while now, though, I kept getting yellow "!"s
in Device Manager for the network card. Well, deinstalling it, reinstalling
it, removing it, putting in a different one, and then putting this one back
again (with lots of restarts) has FINALLY gotten it recognizing the card,
and I can assign protocols to it, but it still won't let me look on the LAN
or go onto the internet. I know that the cables are good (and the ethernet
status lights are ON at both ends), but I can't get it to quite go all the
way.

For a while I didn't have any networks show up in "Network Connections" and
at that time the connection wizard errored out "must have a network
device"... Those days are gone. It seems to be set up right (per my other
XP machine).

DELL Opteron PC
CNET 200WL 10/100 ethernet card
Win XP SP2
Zone Alarm (lite)
Norton AV 2005
Bets Windows (giant) Spyware scaner

I have spent WAY too long on this... stayed up all night, practically, and
really have to get this back to him. This is the same PC about which I
posted a few weeks ago, but now I at least have the card recognized.

In "Device Manager" it does have a "Mini-packet..." - something other which
now has a yellow "!", and when I uninstall it, it only comes back when I
reestablish the TCP/IP (etc) settings for the NIC. It still comes back with
the yellow "!", though (it was installed fine, back when I was having
problems with the NIC driver itself.

Help is greatly appreciated!

I don't know if this will work but it's worth a try:

LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2 stacks:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Use that tool to repair the Winsock as that might be the problem.

With XP pre-SP1, rather than LSPFix, use WinXPFix.exe:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Post-SP2, "netsh winsock reset catalog" will reset the winsock catalog
to default.

Thanks folks! The WinXPFix.exe did the trick (though tried it after
LSPFix). The machine was really messed up. Thankfully this got it going
just before they called asking if they could get it back. Well, next time I
will just reformat and reload if something is THAT messed up!

*chuckles* Well I guess that answers my question. Thanks Malke :)
