Today I discovered several emails in my Deleted Items folder that have no
bodies. When I do Ctrl-F3, the page is blank. Not only that, they are all
time-stamped early this morning, before I started the machine and after the
time I shut down last night (after checking email.) Emails that are
time-stamped after the time I logged on are OK, it just appears to be ones
that were downloaded when I first logged on. Fortunately, they all seem to
be SPAM or worse, and I'm pretty sure I'm the one who deleted them, since
none of them match any of my rules and I don't usually delete messages from
the Junk Mail folder. Nevertheless, it bugs me.

Is it possible that the lack of compacting has anything to do with this? I
had turned off the automatic compacting out of habit, never having trusted
OE to do that at shutdown, preferring to do it manually. Now, every week or
two, I change the setting to "1" and shut WM down, but I've been lax over
the last month or so. On that note, is there a way to initiate compacting
without going through such gyrations? Or is WM not so touchy about this
operation as OE? Should I leave it enabled? If so, what's the recommended
interval?

Thanks for whatever help you can provide,

Windows Mail doesn't need message compaction, it only needs message
store (database) compaction. By default that is initiated every 100 runs.
You can change the compaction interval here:
Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance.
What it does, it removes blank spaces that have developed in the
database. Every time you delete an email, that slot in the database
is made into a blank. Periodic removal of the blanks will make database
accesses faster.
It is doubtful that your current issue has anything to do with compaction,
but it won't hurt to do an extra compaction. Also download and run the
repair options in the WMUtil program:

If no improvement, you can always upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Could it be that these posts were "cleaned" by your ISP or your AV software
as they arrived, and the timestamps represent when they got to your ISP
rather than physically onto your computer?

I'd recommend keeping an eye out to see if this happens again; but since you
state they were all junk I wouldn't worry too much about it at this point.

The ISP is my own website's host (a nice standard host), and I don't think
they touch the messages. I know I've done all I can to disable SPAM filters,
etc. But your suggestion gives me pause, and I will check with them to see
if they have an AV in place. My own AV is Avast! and I have only the most
basic scanners enabled, Network, Standard and Web.

Thanks for the ideas! While I'm here, can you tell me why I get a signature
automatically inserted in my original messages but not in replies?

Thanks! That tool is exactly what I was looking for, even though, like you,
I don't think compacting has anything to do with the disappearing messages.

One of these days, I might even break down and try Windows Live Mail. I just
like to master one app before trying another. I'm one of those people who
helps everyone else in the family and neighborhood with their computers, and
I can't do that until I've learned the apps myself. I've been out of
circulation for quite a while, and I need to catch up.

Well, I don't know why, but none of the possible settings adds signatures to
replies, only to original messages, mail or news. Oh well, I've gotten used
to Alt-I-S-(arrow)-enter.

T

t-4-2

To allow signature added to Replies : - -
Tools > Options > Advanced. UN-check " Signature on the bottom of a Message
" > OK

T

t-4-2

At the risk of being redundant :
Tools > Options > Signatures. UN-check " Don't add signatures to Replies and
Forwards " > OK

Sheez! Like I said, the brain is on its way out, and so are the eyes, I
guess. I thought I'd already done that weeks ago.

Thanks!
