HD disk is there but not there !!!!!

hello

i want to ask a question concerning my HD's on XP
i recieved a new 40GB disk Maxtor
i installed it under XP, and it was working fine
we gave it to a frend with XP dutch version and he did
not activate it but initialised the disk
now the disk is back in my pc but
here it comes

i can see it in the bios of my compaq
i can see it in my device manager (i see all 4 disks)
but i can not see it in the disk management
i dit a RESCAN in win and in a dos windows - no result we
checkt eveything
the disk is there but i can not see it or activate it

NORMALY DISK 4 BUT NO SIGN OF IT


all seems to tell me that the disk is there and no
problem reporting!

it is the maxtor but the name has changed in N 40P

this isd the result when i try to populate the disk

TYPE : UNKNOWN
STATUS : UNREADABLE
PARTITION STYLE : NOT APPLICABLE
CAPACITY :0MB
UNALLOCATED SPACE :0MB
RESERVED SPACE :0MB

the disk DIT work before the guy did initialisation
i did connect it to a 2the pc (dell) to try if this one
could see it its recognized in the bios
but nothing else

i use the disk with an ata/133 controller
the first time it gave me a kind of message
like "if you are using unix.. F1 to update the
configuration...

normaly when i retrieve a disk its placed off-line
when we connect it again i only have to aktivate it

can someone give me a hint where to start to solve this
issue

If there's nothing important on it reformat,boot from
xp cd,choose recovery,type:FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs
C: being the hd,if not possible to format,change the
language,dutch isnt english.
