Having trouble sending mail through Windows Mail

One blue eye

I use AOL mail (free acct) and Embarq is my DSL provider. I have a Desktop
HP w/XP and a HP laptop with Vista. How am I supposed to set up my mail
program using Windows Mail? The only reason I want to set it up is because I
can't email anyone through an interent site link. Computer said my default
mail program had not been set up. It appears as is the in boxes (from 2 AOL
accts adn 1 embarq.mail.com acct) imported but having trouble sending stuff.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject '', Account:
'pop.aol.com', Server: 'smtp.aol.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '556
CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND AUTH.', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 556, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Have you set up the AOL account as AOL recommends?

http://www.postmaster.aol.com/imap/express.html

They don't seem to have written instructions for Windows Mail, so use their
instructions for Outlook Express but under Windows Mail instead.

Connections to port 25 are often blocked if they cross from one internet
provider's equipment to another's on the way, to cause trouble for
spammers.

You might ask Embarq if they have similar instructions for setting up
to use their email servers. They're likely to have put them somewhere
on their web site.

I think I solved it! I looked on the Embarq website.Under Windows Mail
account properties, check the box requiring server authentication. I seem to
be in business now. Thank you for your help.

There are a couple of issues here.
1. Why are you using the mail server's IP address, 66.149.249.33, instead
of the server's name? This can cause problems since IP assignments change.
2. It looks like the SMTP server may not be on the same network as the
entity providing your Internet connection. Who provided your Internet connection
when you got that error message? Was it your home ISP?

You may not have the AOL accounts set up properly. Check here:

http://email.about.com/od/windowsmailtips/qt/et_access_aol.htm

Using port 25 on a server that doesn't belong to your internet proviser
is often blocked to cause trouble for spammers.

If you also want to use the Embarq account, use their instructions:
