having mouse problems after upgrading to win2000 on my hp pavillion

I just upgraded my HP Pavillion 6630 from Windows 98 to Win 2000
Professional. Got all the bugs out except for the mouse freezes when
I boot up. It seems to happen every other time I turn on the computer.
When I happens I have to shut it down and try again. Sometimes it
takes 5 or 6 times before it works ok. Does anyone know how to fix
this or has had the same problem? I checked for updated drivers and I
seem to be using the most current one. For what it's worth my
computer is a pentium 2 500mhz with 192 MB ram.

Have you tried a different mouse?

No I haven't yet. Should I try a different one and see if it goes
away? Also if i do do I need a new mouse driver?

Of course you should try a different mouse - this should be your
first problem solving step! An no - if Win2000 needs a different
driver then it will ask you for your Win2000 CD.
