Having huge problems with Windows Mail

Hi

I have just bought a new PC which runs Windows Vista.

I cannot send or receive emails. Yesterday I was able to, but now I can't.
I get the following error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.busymummy.co.uk',
Server: 'mail.busymummy.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I have uninstalled McAfee to no avail.

Do you have any suggestions - I am getting desparate!

Do you have automatic updates turned on? If so, check to see if update
KB929123 has been installed. If it has, uninstall it. I had the same problem
after the last batch of Windows Update. If you are also having problems
accessing the internet then check to see if you have got update KB933566
installed and uninstall that as well. Set both of these updates as 'hidden
updates' to prevent them from being re-installed. For information, I use
Norton Internet Security and have had no problems with it whatsoever.

Whether significant or not, I have had the exact message, (substitute my
server for hers) for weeks. I don't have McAfee and it started long before
the 123 download.
It didn't affect my mail service except that it is annoying in that it pops
up all the time.
In my case it started with an Email address that was "invalid", and couldn't
be sent.
It was kijijispam.com and still can't be sent to.
The day of that infamous 123 update I lost my CD drive!

Rachel,

Bummer. I and several others have had problems sending e-mails. Go to

www.oehelp.com/wmutil

and download Steve's utility to your desktop per his instructions. Then use
the utility, after unzipping, to compact your e-mail and the problem should
go away. It did for me and hopefully will for you.

Also, in the future, compact your e-mail every time the dialog appears
asking if you want to compact your e-mail.

Good luck and let me know what happens.

Oh, come on. You don't have any real ideas and WMUtil won't help here.
Go away.

I unistalled KB929123 and nothing happened. I can send email but cannot
receive email. I send email to myself, check on the "send" box - yes, it was
send but no one knows where it's going. Not to Windows Mail, not to Comcast
mail, not to the T-Mobile Blackberry. Suggestions anyone?

The domain 'kijijispam.com" does not exist.
No wonder you can't send mail to it.

You're only exposing your own ignorance by proposing
an inappropriate solution ad infinitum ad nauseam.

Irene, the suggested fix (below) was addressed to
"Rachel Saint". I assume you are not that person, so why
did you assume that the fix applied to you?

What happens when you click on the "Send/Receive" button?
Does it appear to go through the motions of contacting the
mail server? Were you ever able to receive email on this
computer? If yes, did anything else happen just before it
quit receiving mail? Have you tried adding that mail account
again, and then deleting the old mail account? Do you have
other mail accounts you can try?
Which antivirus program are you running?

Hello Gary and everyone

Sorry for the delay.
So far I have taken the following actions:

Uninstalled Updates as suggested in earlier mail on this group
Uninstalled McAfee
Removed accounts and reinstalled accounts
added a different account
Changed the settings to my account

None of these have worked.

It goes through the motions of working, but fails at the connection point
when I get the error message I stated. It did work on the first day, so I am
not sure what has happened. This is a fairly new account, and I have not
tried to import stuff from outlook.

I am not sure what else to try - I know that there are several email to be
received - is there any way that I can clear them and see if that helps?

You might try to check your mail at http://www.mail2web.com.
If that works, it verifies that your username and password are correct.
I don't know if busymummy.co.uk offers web mail access since
it is not an ISP but a vanity domain for a parenting site.

Yes I was able to pick up the message from here - in fact I have deleted them
all except one to see if that was the problem. I am still unable to use
windows mail. The error message is:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.busymummy.co.uk',
Server: 'mail.busymummy.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Is is the socket error?

I am running out of ideas....

That's a "Connection timed out" error. Do you have any anti-spam program or
any anti-virus scanning email? Either of these can slow things down and
cause a timeout.

Hi Frank

I have uninstalled McAfee - although could not actually find the uninstaller
on the website - do you have the link.

I am now running Avast which I believe should be fine.

I now get a slightly different error message:
Account: 'mail.busymummy.co.uk', Server: 'mail.busymummy.co.uk', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 209.124.84.34
(209.124.84.34:110), connect error 10060', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

Sometimes there is one bad message on the server which
does not allow any messages to be downloaded. Perhaps
the one you left undeleted is the bad one. Go back to web mail
and delete that remaining message. Then send a new message
to yourself to see if it downloads.

Make sure Avast is configured so that it does NOT scan emails.

If my previous suggestions did not solve the problem, try this:

There is a new TCP tuning feature in Vista which is
not compatible with some servers.
a. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd.
b. The search results will display a program titled cmd.exe.
c. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator".
d. Type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotation marks, then hit Enter.
e. Test your POP account and see if you can download your mail now.
f. If nothing changes, re-enable the autotuning feature by running the
command "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal".

Hope this helps,
Gary VanderMolen
