Hardware & software firewalls?

K

Kenny

Have seen a few posts here and in other groups which suggest that if you're
using a router with a firewall built in that there's no need for a software
firewall on the PC.
I find this confusing and would like a definitive answer if possible or a
link to somewhere which explains this.
I'm using a 3Com wireless modem/router, have firewall on that set to Medium,
but also using the free Comodo firewall on 2 PC's connected to it, one hard
wired and one wireless.
I've always assumed that using both makes it safer but does it?
Replies appreciated.

Hi Kenny,

Firewalls on your PC protect your PC from network attacks. The Firewall on
your router that you mentioned is designed to prevent any unauthorised entry
to your LAN. So if you are happy to trust the Firewall on your router that
one would be enough.

Personally I think more security is better, although you do have to watch
out for any conflicts between the 2 firewalls.

If someone breaks the firewall on your router, at lease you have another
layer of security for them to breach if you use a Firewall on your PC.
