hard drive space

I recently purchased a Dell PC with 80GB DataSafe internal backup hard drive.
I noticed that when I look up the capacities for these 2 drives they read as
follows...

C:\ 52.7
D:\ 18.4 (backup)

These equal 71.1 GB. I understand that some space is allocated for running
Windows, Norton Ghost,etc.....but 8 GBs worth?

Just curious if I am misunderstanding something or I have some kind of
hidden space or partition.

thanks in advance, i appreciate it!

That amount seems OK to me. A clean install of XP Pro with Service Pack
2 and no subsequent updates and no programs installed is about 2.5GB
all by itself. Add a nice hefty swap file (page file in Windows),
temporary files, System Restore, the Ghost image, etc. etc. etc.

That is the difference between Binary gigabytes (2^30 bytes) used by
Windows and decimal gigabytes (10^9 bytes) used by hard drive
peddlers.

80 decimal gigabytes = =75.51 binary gigabytes.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck

Actually, just thought of something. I do understand your answer. But why
isnt that space allocated under the "used" section. So if were to uninstall
Norton ghost Backup,etc.... would my overall capacity increase?... or would
that just increase my "free" space? or both?

P.S. Are you familiar with Norton Ghost Backup Software functionality??
