Hard Drive lagging on Shutdown

I am working with a Compaq Evo N410C Laptop running WinXP
Pro with the latest drivers & updates. When the PC shuts
down, it goes through the normal shutdown process (loggin
user off, closing netowrk connections, etc.), then
mysteriously hangs for about 60 seconds. The pause begins
after all messages, icons, and menus are gone. No error
message appears, and I cannot bring up Task Manager. The
mouse and keyboard still respond (The various "Lock" key
still light up), and the only clue I have noticed is that
the Hard Drive light is on steady for the full 60 seconds
until it shuts down, as if it is writing a HUGE file.

I've checked for disk errors, power settings, BIOS
updates, and no luck in finding what is causing the lag on
shutdown. Event Viewer reports no errors under any logs /
tabs on shutdown. Net research mentions Nvidia drivers
may be an issue, but the laptop has an ATI video card. My
biggest block is that I can't bring up Task Manager to see
what is running during this process, as TM gets shut down
as the PC logs off.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Geoffrey, rt click on MyComputer>select
Prop>Advanced>Performance-Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory-Change.
Click on No Paging File>Apply>Ok. Restart and go back and unclick
No Paging File. It maybe corrupt.
Also, check here. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm Select S
and scroll to shutdown. This can also
happen when you Enable Clear Paging file on shutdown.

The Paging File was it - more specifically, the user had
set it to be 1536 MB in size, no less... that will
definately cause a lag. ;-)
