Hard disk space lost mysteriously

T

tzvikaz

I have windows XP SP2.
recently I noticed that the minute windows loads the free space on the
OS disk is slowly getting smaller.
By lloking at the task manager i cant see any proeccess that does that
maybe the 'system' proccesss.

After I restart the lost space is back again. Any idea how do I find
out what causing it?

Thanks.

sounds like it could be malware, try running a spyware scan and see if that
finds anything - try Ad-Aware SE, i've found it 's great at removing problem
programs that were hidin in the background

To investigate how you are using hard disk space you need to make sure that
you can see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and
folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is
unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should
also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types"
is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected
and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total
Size, and Free Space.

You still will not see the System Volume Information folder.

FileSize -a useful tool for use with Windows Explorer when investigating how
disk space is being used.

The download link is not obvious. Click the here in the two sentences of the
web page accessed through the link above. "I can't count the number of times
someone has asked for this. So here is a module you can install that shows a
Folder Size column in Explorer."

To increase you free space on your C select Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and
remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore points can be quite
large.

You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your Recycle Bin and
Remove Temporary Internet Files. Whenever you remove redundant files you
should always run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore on
your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb. Right
click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System Restore.
Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time find the
slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get
to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

Are you using any Norton Utilities?

If your hard drive is formatted as NTFS another potential gain arises with
your operating system on your C drive. In the Windows Directory of your
C partition you will have some Uninstall folders in your Windows folder
typically: $NtServicePackUninstall$ and $NtUninstallKB282010$ etc.

These files may be compressed or not compressed. If compressed the
text of the folder name appears in blue characters. If not compressed
you can compress them. Right click on each folder and select Properties,
General, Advanced and check the box before Compress contents to
save Disk Space. On the General Tab you can see the amount gained
by deducting the size on disk from the size. Folder compression is
only an option on a NTFS formatted drive / partition.

Another default setting on a large drive which could be wasteful is that for
temporary internet files especially if you do not store offline copies on
disk. The default allocation is 3% of drive. Depending on your attitude to
offline copies you could reduce this to 1% or 2%. In Internet Explorer
select Tools, Internet Options, General, Temporary Internet Files, Settings
to make the change. At the same time look at the number of days history
is held.

The default allocation for the Recycle Bin is 10 % of drive. On your drive
5% should be sufficient. In Windows Explorer place the cursor on your
Recycle Bin, right click and select Properties, Global and move the slider
from 10% to 5%.

Thanks a lot Gerry. That's a nice post, albeit it didnt really concern
my question...
Im using 'Totol Commander' to check my file sizes and its configured to
see all hidden and system files. My system restore is disabled the
minute after I finished installing windows.
I dont use Norton utilities.
Its not internet temp files either...
The free HD space is getting shorter by the second, the minute XP loads
and even after I close all proccesses. The lost space is magically
returned after a restart.

Does your pagefile.sys increase in size?

How much free space and how large is your hard disk? Is the
disk partitioned?

Page file is not growing ~1.5 gb
HD is partitioned into 2.
part 1(windows partition) : 60 gb
part2 (data) : 100 gb

free space on part1 after restart ~20gb
free space on part1 10 hours after restart ~0 gb

Check size of the "c:\pagefile.sys" file?

You can also try to monitor your folders size. Use ViewFolderSize Pro
http://www.moveax.com/viewfoldersizepro/
It's a slick program for monitoring specific folders or for finding out
exactly which folders are taking up the most disk space. The program is
fast, efficient and gives you a lot of configurable options.

Are you confident that Totol Commander is correctly
reporting and that it is not the problem?

In Window Explorer if you right click on your Windows
partition and select Properties does it confirm the same
free space as Totol Commander?

How much disk space is Totol Commander using?

How did you disable System Restore?

What specific files are occupying the space? One screen
shot show 2.08 gb free space but the other gives no indication
how the space is being used. That makes the claim that 'Totol
Commander' is capable of showing all folders and files of
doubtful value.

Even with System Restore turned off I would still expect
to see a System Volume Information folder. None is visible.

What allowances are you making for Default Allocations
to System Restore ( 12% ) , the Recycle Bin ( 10 % ) and
Temporary Internet Files ( 3% ) ? Also be wary of the effect
of file compression which displays the original file size and
actually occupies a lesser space if compressed.

The screenshots show that the total occupied space is about 36gb while
the free space is 2 gb out of 60.
I set temp inet files to use 1875mb
Recycle bin is emptym system restore is disabled.
You are not regarding the fact that after a restart all the free space
is mysteriously recovered and by each second the windows is up again
its slowly disappearing again.

I do not share your confidence in 'Totol Commander'. Why did you
choose such obscure software? It could be misreporting.

In my last post I made some suggestions regarding certain aspects
that can cause confusion. It would help if you could try to answer
the particular points raised. To say that System Restore is disabled
and that the Recyle Bin does not address the points I was making!

Would you please try FileSize in conjunction with Windows
Explorer and see if it backs up the results 'Totol Commander'
is giving.

Can you please post this screenshot at the end of a session when
you have minimal free space.

I did not use total commander.
The scrrenshots I posted are of the software someone here suggested.
"ViewFolderSize"
I made them when there was almost no space left. ViewFolderSize is like
a plugin for explorer. it adds this column of the folder size.

You have me confused!

You posted this earlier:

I found the problem!
apparently it was the serv-U ftp service.
I stopped it and the problem stopped.

Thanks for all your help.

So what exactly was the problem?
