Hard disk as NONE in BIOS, but can be detected in Window XP

I have bought an additional 250G HD and when I set BIOS to AUTO, it can be
detected, but the LBA capacity is only 80G. The worst is the original Window
XP cannot be booted up, only an error message "press a key to reboot".

But when I set the BIOS to NONE, Window XP can be booted up and surprisingly
the new drive can be seen in Device Manager! I can partition it and format
it with the correct disk space: 250G.

However, anyone please help to see if there is any "potential problem" here
because this addtional drive is for me to put many photos and I don't want to
know that it will finally crashed some day!

Anyone know how Window XP works? is it important for BIOS to detect the
250G or just window XP detects it is enough?

Thanks very much

Did you install it as the Master? I'm guessing that you
installed it with the jumpers set to Master on both hard
drives, [I take it that you have both drives installed].
