grouping button remains dimmed regardless of selection

while trying to Group/Ungroup objects. But no matter what i do the selecting
of objects to be Grouped does not activate the Grouping portion of the
Drop-Down list.I have tried drawing a circle around the textboxes, tried
Shift and Click to select. Either way the options remained dimmed (inactive).
What could be up with that?
