Greenhorn 2000 Login Issues--Account Disabled? (desperate, sort of)

Hi,

Admittedly my intentions are a tiny bit in a "gray area", but certainly

legal I believe, and morally and ethically sound. I'm not trying to do

anything wrong. (Of course I'm not entirely objective, either.)

SUMMARY:
* Can't select domain in Win 2K log on box
* Local account *may* have been disabled
* If new 2K log on box is (oddly) for workgroup log on, what is the
syntax for specifying Domain in the User Name
* I just want to get on to this, my old corporate laptop to grab
personal data before I turn in. They didn't even know I had this
machine when I told them. This request is on the up-and-up--I really
need some of my old LNotes emails and my PalmPilot data, and this is
the only practical means I have (now) to view them.
Thank you. This responding will produce GOOD kharma ONLY. My needs
are legit.

DETAILS

I've left my job (joint agreement, sort of--it's amicable at least)
after many years of stellar perf, but with a bad 9 months or so as I
was dealing with new and vexing personal issues. My Co. uses Notes for

email+ and has most machine on XP Pro. I turned in my my current
laptop, etc, and told them I had its predecessor at home and needed to
bring it in. Cool, they said. The old machine--"THE machine" is an
inspiron with a busted (excepting 1.5" x 1.5" in the top left corner)
screen. I bought an inexpensive external display so I could use THE
machine for a week or two while I ordered a new one. (Dell Insp Core 2

Duo) I do a lot of database work.

Problem: I went into the office over the weekend to pack up my stuff,
and brought THE machine with me to use one of the office monitors to
check if I could log on. I did, with a PW from 2 generations ago. All

good. Then I rebooted with the thing connected to an office LAN cable
so I could check my personal email. I knew my network account had been

disabled, but had still been able to uses the office's internet
connection on the other machine that I turned in. Something weird
happened.

All I can say is that now, on logging in I do not get the screen that
includes a domain selection drop-down--Just entries for User Name and
PW. Clicking "Options >>" only presents a check box to "Log on using
dial-up connection."

I can't get on now, with any combination of ID/PW I try. I read the
absense of the domain selection drop down might mean the computer is
expecting me to log in as part of a work group (never done that) and
that my domain may need to be implicit in my user name (e.g, User Name
= "DOMAIN\USER"). I tried combinations of this to no avail.

An IT friend at the Co tells me that even though I wasn't logged into
the network, since I was on the LAN for internet access, it may have
sniffed me out and disabled my local machine access IN ADDITION to Ntwk

access, which was disabled several days ago. He says I am screwed, and

that really I would need to image the disk, and apply a new OS image on

top of it, and then try to extract data. I only want to get my old
Palm Data (migrated to Notes/Blackberry on the newer machine and lost
it) and to grab some personal emails truly personal.

Although I did burn my notes mailbox and user id from the machine I
turned in, I can't afford to buy the notes client SW just for this
purpose.

Please help, even if that means just telling me, "Buddy, you're
screwed." I really am just doing this to get my personal info, and
your help would only produce good kharma.

Thanks, Nick

call your previous employer, and ask him politely if the IT department would
recover those files for you

I guess that is your only option.

I found a utility that allowed me to fix the problem since my local
account was still valid. This is a great link to the author's site.
The utility worked great initially.

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

I then completely and utterly destroyed the thing by (?) telling the
machine that it was no longer part of my work domain in the user
accounts. This really screwed things up, and now I have a completely
hosed machine that will not boot=="ntdlr is missing" Regrettable I do
not have a boot disk other than that provided with the password fix
utility above.

As a (stupid) workaround, I tried to use an XP boot (install) disc that
was for my other machine, but had to partially install XP in the same
directory to get to the recovery console functionality. Now the
machine doesn't know if it's a computer or furniture.
