i have an amd athlon 64 3000+ with 1 gig ram and an ati radeon 9600 128
card. not really satisfied with performance, runs new games at medium.
is it my card and which would be best????

Without a shred of doubt, your card is the bottleneck. Look at where it is
positioned here:

I recommend you treat yourself to the fastest AGP card you're willing to pay
for. There are much faster cards about, namely the Radeon X1800 XL/XT and
GeForce 7800GT/GTX, but I'm pretty sure they're all for PCI-E only.

I agree with Tony, if you are on a budget, go to www.newegg.com and
look at the NVIDIA 6600GT's or the ATI X800GT's, GTO's, or GTO2's. All
of these are pretty darn good performance/price. Make sure they are
AGP though.
