GPedit.msc vs GPMC

When I run a report on any particualr computer/user combination via
GPMC I get a nice report of all the settings that are applied to that
particular system. However when I actually log into the system (in
this case winxp sp2) and run gpedit.msc I get a completely different
answer. It says that none of the settings that I have configured are
configured. I know that they in fact are configured and I now that
they are configured via group policy (I am setting windows firewall
settings that are being set). My question is why am I getting
different answers in the different tools?

gpedit is at its name indicates the editor to edit the local group policies.
If you want a report like GPMC you have to use rsop.msc
