Google Desktop Search vs. Windows Indexing Service

Should Windows Indexing Service be turned off if you are using the new Google
Desktop Search? Won't that improve XP performance if indexing is off? How
much would performance be improved? With Windows XP Indexing Service on, does
it always impact performance in all applications, or only when searching the
hard drive? The Google Desktop only indexes certain types of files. Does that
mean it ignores all others making it a rather specialized tool and that
Windows Indexing Service should be left on for now?

The indexing service will run from time to time. It's impact is on how much
the hard drive is active, but there is not much other effect.

But Google Desktop Search hangs my XP box every time. Nothing breaks
the hang except the power button. ctrl-alt-del has no effect at all.
It happened both times I tried it. It hangs when selecting one of the
items in the result set. Hourglass is on and every app is stopped. I
let it run overnight, thinking it would eventally come back, but no.
Not nice!

Google Desktop Search is not ready for prime time.

Google Desktop works fine for me.
