I installed Windows OneCare and Antispyware beta a few weeks ago.

The OneCare has probems with very long scan times and the large update files
which run automatically when you switch on the computer will preclude its use
on my daughter's 33kbps modem connection. Otherwise I like this application.

I upgraded the Antispyware beta 1 to Defender beta 2 a couple of days ago.
Maybe I do not need it at all because according to the blurb on the Defender
website, OneCare already has antispy capability. Is this true?

However, I then encountered the never-ending update problem, the agonisingly
long scan times, the unrecognised Skype, IE PrivacyKeeper, Sony ISP and other
software which Defender seemed in danger of trying to remove from my
computer, and worse still, the WIFI connection corruption problem. Yesterday
I repaired my connection a hundred times just to troubleshoot for Microsoft.

Today I took Defender out of my startup list and re-installed good old
SpyBot S&D. I have not needed this program since I started using NIS 2005 a
year ago.

Not even this got my internet connection back and so I have now un-installed
Defender completely. Hooray for being able to check my email again at last.

Microsoft Beta tester I have been, by default, all my working life. IT
professional I am not. There is no excuse for Microsoft to have produced
rubbish like this and made it public.

I am disgusted.

Windows Defender (Beta 2) is a totally different product from AntiSpyware
(Beta 1). The product was totally re-written from the ground up to operate as
a service instead of an application. Since it is totally new, the build
quality is not necessarily going to be any better than Beta 1, although I
personally do not have any major issues with it.

The only issues I have encountered personally are automatic scans not
running at the time I set, and the definition update system not working
correctly.

Hello Ryster,

look in Scheduled Tasks go to advanced and show hidden, maybe you can
see what WD does wrong there.

The longer I lurk in this group, the gladder I am that I removed both MSAS
and WD. I rely entirely on pgms that I know work (Ad-Aware, AntiSpyware,
Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster, AVG Free, and Sygate Personal Firewall), and
that don't mess with my computer or my head.

Removing both is a strategy that I heartily recommend.

When I say "remove," I mean *remove*. For this I use cleanup tools and
techniques that do actually *remove* the evil junk.

Old, lurking, and happily devoid of MSAS and WD.

WindowsOneCare will include Windows Defender at some point, but the current
public beta does not, so I use both, and have no problems with either on my
machines. But I think both products are designed to work with Broadband,
not dial up, though I would WD with either.
