going into Standby when told not to

I have seen a few times where a Windows 2000 Pro machine,
and at least one Windows XP Pro, will blank the screen and
won't come on when someone moves the mouse or hits a
keyboard button.
Usually, Ctrl+Alt+Del works, but not always. If I get it
to turn back on, there's an error message saying that the
system couldn't go into "standby" because an Office
document was open.
BUT! power settings are set to "Never" go into standby.

Normally I'd say check the BIOS power management settings.
Maybe they're overriding the OS, but the standby setting
in the BIOS was turned off or non-existent in all cases.

Anyone know what's going on?

I have gotten similar messages after I set my laptop (Dell
Latitude C800 W2k SP4, BIOS A22) to access the net, the
message says "pppoe file is preventing hibernation". Am
looking for a means to permit hibernation.

The laptop will hibernate if I reboot the computer, and do
not "connect to the net" via DSL and EnterNet300 pppoe.

When attempting to set "hibernate" up, I did find that
there was a "Video driver update" that was required to
permit "hibernation".

Re your comments on the BIOS being set properly, After
upgrading to W2k SP4 and my BIOS to "fix" A22, my Infra
Red connection would not work. I found that apparently
during one of the upgrades my BIOS had been "reset" to "no
IR". I do not know which upgrade was the cause. If you
have not checked your BIOS after an upgrade, you just
might want to try.

Am interested in solutions to your problem, hope my
comments will help you.
