Glitchy graphics and lockups under XP

P

Paul C

I have recently installed Windows XP, and am having
enormous trouble with games using my 3d card. The games I
have run that use DirectX 8.1 have graphic glitches
(flashes to white over some or all of the screen) from
time to time, and also randomly freeze from time to time.
When this frezze occurs, I cannot do anyting except reset
the machine. The XP error log shows an entry referring to
the "True Vector Engine." I cant find anything in the
knowledge base about such a thing.

The games in question are Project IGI2 and the demo of
XIII. Warlords Battlecry II (not 3D, but uses directx
8.1) has random glitches where the game freezes for a few
seconds at a time, and the starts again. The problem
seems to be associated with trying to play several sounds
at once.

None of these problems occurred under Windows 98. The
ironic part is that I bought and installed XP to get
better stability, especially over the longer term. I have
installed the latest drivers for everything, and even
installed DirectX 9.0a, to no avail.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

True vector is part of your Zone Alarm firewall Paul. You may
want to uninstall it, and after you reboot make sure that vsmon
(the truevector service) is not running in your list of processes
in the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL). Hope this helps! :)

I would suggest you determine what brand graphics card you have and then
visit the manufacturer's web site to download the latest drivers. It sounds
as if you're running the mini drivers furnished by the various companies to
Microsoft in the summer of 2001.

Thanks heaps. That makes a lot of sense. I'll try it.
Now all I wish is that I hadn't out in an email address
in my first post, as now I am being spammed! Any way to
remove it?

Cheers

Hi Paul,

That's most likely a result of the Swen virus which monitors
all newsgroups worldwide to send itself to other unsuspecting
users. Filter out those emails based on their until eventually
all mail and newsgroup servers begin to filter out that virus,
and infected users clean it from their machines. Read more at:
