Question about DirectX and WMP

D

Dustin

Lets see if i can make this a easy question to ask

I have Microsoft FS2002 on my XP System but I also have another computer
running

Windows 98, which doesnt have and cant run FS2002

My XP system has
DirectX: v.8.1
WMP: v.8.0

My 98 System has
DirectX: v.7.0
WMP: v.6.4

I noticed the FS2002 CD has
DirectX: v.8.0a
WMP: v.7.1

I dont think the DX and WMP on the CD were used in FS2002's installation on
my XP

computer, because they are older versions. Would it be ok if i installed the

DirectX and WMP on the CD on my Windows 98 computer (Not the whole program,
just

those two things. I understand that FS2002 can only be on 1 computer). It
could

use these newer versions of DirectX and WMP that my XP computer doesnt need.

If anyone needs clarifaction of this question, feel free to ask.

The safer way to do it would be to go to Windows Update and download the
appropriate version. You should really update Windows XP, Dustin. DirectX
is up to 9.0b now, and has much improved support for DirectPlay.

I would update my DirectX in XP, but its working fine for me so ill leave it
alone "If it aint broke, dont fix it"
I would also update it, but i have dial up and my download speeds are
atrocious. Besides, that wasnt the question i was asking.

Unfortunately, it is the correct answer, though. You really should
update. It doesn't take that long. Besides, if you're not current with
Windows Update you can now order a free update CD (delivery included) here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp If you're on the
Internet, and don't have the current critical updates, then you're supplying
the bad guys with a launching pad to proliferate their tools of infection.

Just to let you know im talking about updating Windows 98's DirectX and WMP
with the DirectX and WMP that are on the FS2002 CD. Like i said in the
message "I dont think the DX and WMP on the CD were used in FS2002's
installation on my XP computer, because they are older versions. It could
use these "newer" versions of DirectX and WMP that my XP computer doesnt
need" In a sense, the ones on the CD would be newer to 98 but older to XP
and because of that, I was thinking about using them to update my 98's DX
and WMP. Could i do that? My Windows XP DX and WMP work fine right now, so
I'll leave those alone.

To my knowledge the directx will work fine. I'm using the directx 8.x that
was on my video card cd under win me and I've used it under 98 and it worked
fine. It also works fine for me under xp. As far as M.S. update goes just
make sure your connection is firewalled and downnload only those updates
that apply to you.The updates have numbers that are numbers in the knowledge
base if you want to see what they are before you install. Most will be for
the media player, your dial up so no point in you even trying to stream
video or music. The news group is full of 'I updated and now my computer is
slow'. I don't do the update as I am on dialup also and I do not run any
antivirus programs, never have most likely never will. They just suck up
resources and do nothing for me. The only time you'll really get some bad
karma is if you install shareware, freeware and visit porn sites. I've never
gotten a virus. With dial up you can tell if someones trying to do something
anyways. The best thing to do is visit the knowledge base and look up
directx , it will tell at the bottom what products it applies to.

Thank you all for your help. The DX and WMP installed fine on my machine. At
least they will be put to use instead of sitting on the disc ^_^
Thanks again, Dustin

Just to let you know im talking about updating Windows 98's DirectX and WMP
with the DirectX and WMP that are on the FS2002 CD.

If you question is whether it is "legal" to do that, then yes... the
progs are freebie's no matter where you get them.

If you're asking whether the Dx version on the FS2002 cd is okay for
your Win98 system... only you and your graphics card will know for
sure. (but probably).

But still, it would be better to dl the correct/current updates from
MS.
