Getting XP to see W98's internet

Dear All,

I apologise if this question seems to add to the redundacy of many
topics, but I have looked at many (and followed their links) on this
subject but none answer my question or work.

We have a W98 machine that is connected to a (BT) broadband internet
connection, and I wish to share with my XP. We think that W98 is the
first edition, is this going to cause a problem?

I have tried to network them by using the wizard on my XP machine, it
seemed successful, as W98 can see my shared files, although XP cannot
access the shaed files on W98, although it can 'see' it my network
computers. Does this mean that they are not networked fully, or is it
some permissions field that I cannot find on W98? Also there is no
luck with sharing the internet connection from W98.

Any thoughts? Will it be easier if I connect the broadband modem to
the XP, although I'd rather keep the set up as is and get that
working.

Many thanks
james

if you can see the files but cannot access them,, it
usually indicates a firewall on the windows 98. You can
share the internet if you set up the internet connection
sharing on both computers

You will probably have better luck sharing your internet connection if your
XP machine is connected to the internet. Once you do that, you can run the
Network Setup Wizard (which can be found from the Network Connections
folder). This will give you options to share you internet connection, set
up a workgroup, and create a disk that you can use to run the wizard on your
98 machine.

As for your file sharing problems, make sure you have file and printer
sharing installed and turned on for your Win98 box. Running the Network
Setup Wizard disk on your 98 machine will do this for you.

If your W98 PC is W98FE, that won't work. The main feature IMHO of
W98SE was the addition of ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). If you
switch PCs, so that the XP PC has the direct connection to broadband,
then XP can share that connection with the W98 PC, using ICS.

Given the low price of a router, I suggest that for sharing. For some
discussion, see http://home.comcast.net/~bobwbsgs/homenet.txt -- a
basic tutorial on your choices.
