Getting Started

My PC has been upgraded from Me OS to XP Home for over two
years and upgraded, through the years from Office 2000
Pro, 2002 Pro and now 2003 Pro. Unfortunately I have not
used Access until now and I have a problem in which I
cannot open any template databases.

I have obtained the System Information Report and I have
the following active Jet Core Components:

Item Value
Description Jet 2.x
Path C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MSRD2X32.DLL
Version 3.000.2504

Description Jet 3.x
Path C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msrd3x40.dll
Version 4.00.6508.0

Description Jet 4.0
Path Not Available
Version

Description Lotus
Path C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msltus40.dll
Version 4.00.6508.0

Description ODBC
Path Not Available
Version

Description SharePoint
Path C:\PROGRA-1\MICROS1\OFFICE11\MSJPP40.DLL
Version 11.00.5510.0

Description Text
Path C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mstext40.dll
Version 4.00.8015.0

Being a novice, and all I want to do is a simple database,
should I have a number of versions of Jet available or
just one?
Jet 3.x seems to pointing to Jet 4.0? - Why?
What's my course to rectify my problem - any suggestions
please?

Thanking you in advance

You should upgrade to Jet 4.0 SP8 -- this will install all
previous Jet upgrades, which are cumulative. See the MS
Product Support Center KB article to download this upgrade
for Windows XP, at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;239114#5

Then, read this article *closely*, to understand a couple
of warning messages you'll encounter:
http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/preview.aspx?
AssetID=HA011071331033

Don't worry about understanding "sandbox mode" -- all it
does is prohibit very destructive commands from being run
from inside Access, which is a no-brainer.
