Getting rid of the Welcome screen

K

Kate

I believe that there is a way to lose the Welcome screen, but it
entails having to log on instead. Is it possible to go from "Windows
XP-on-black-background" straight to my desktop, please?

Thank you

Download Tweak UI from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Then expand the Logon option and select Autologon and Check the Autologon
box.

OR

Start/Run and enter: CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2
On the User tab: pick (highlight) the account you want to automatically log
on
Then uncheck: Users must enter username and password
Next click Apply and enter the password (if the account you pick has a
password)
Finally click OK until your completely out

Thanks for that, JS. I already had Tweak UI so made the adjustments
there. Now, how can I stop Windows from telling me that it is loading
my settings? It doesn`t have to tell me it`s doing it each time I
start up - just get on and do it. If, for some reason, it cannot load
my settings, *that`s* the time I need to know!

I'm not certain this can be done, there is however a Microsoft KB
article on how to logon using the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys.
This may eliminate the message.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291559/EN-US/ (see the section
titled: Use the classic logon screen)

Thank you again. I had a look at the MS support link you mentioned,
but it doesn`t seem to directly address this particular issue. Maybe,
as you say, the "loading settings" screen cannot be bypassed.

I don`t think I will chance tweaking start up any more, in case
Windows has a tantrum! The "loading settings" screen appears only
very briefly so I think I can live with it after all. I shall make a
note of the utility you mentioned, though, for future reference.

Thanks again.
