!Genuine Windows Validation now mandatory for downloads...

M

now that all downloads (except for security and updates) from any/every
Microsoft website will require mandatory validation of the Microsoft OS
running on your computer(s) BEFORE starting the download, I thought let's
try to see if it actually works now that it's no longer in beta.....

I went to the following website, picked Microsoft advanced calculator to
download as a test at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...59-b53a-4dc9-8265-da47f157c091&displaylang=en

Following the prompts, I was required to download and run the Genuine
Windows Validation tool.

First problem:
XP Pro SP2 by default will NOT allow webpages to run ActiveX
controls/scripts in the Internet Zone. You have to put the website/url in
the trusted zone for the website to work properly.

Then I downloaded the validation tool OK, and XP prompted me to allow this
*unknown program that may harm my computer* to run...

So I said OK, run it....

This is the response I got:

"This version of the windows validation tool is no longer supported. Please
download the newest version and ensure your system clock is accurate."

I have downloaded the newest version and my system clock is synchronised
every time I log on to the net.

I got this error when it was in beta mode, but there was always the option
to bypass the validation check and continue the downloads I wanted.

Now that validation is mandatory, and there is no way to bypass the check,
no one will be able to download from the Microsoft download site any
more.....

Nice one Microsoft!!!!!!!

Any MSVP's care to comment and/or report back to Microsoft that it's NOT
working?

Hi

Works OK here. Nothing has to be added the Trusted Zone. You'll have to
check your Security sttings.

Because you have done something to your system that blocks the activex
download, why do you think that no one will be able to download from
Microsoft? I have no problem on 4 different computers.

Try getting the latest validation file at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Visit it and let it scan for updates
and it should prompt you to
install the new components.

Got it. The question now is why you have to go to the Updates web page to
get the tool you need to use the validation page, and that the validation
page downloads, installs, and runs the outdated tool, and makes NO mention
of getting the up to date tool from the updates web page...

Hi

If certain people decide to block AtiveX downloads, then that's up to them.
They won't be to access various web sites/pages.

When IE/XP/SP2 pops up the ActiveX warning and stops ActiveX controls
running the only way around that is to add the website to the trusted zone.

For the Internet zone sure; Not for the trusted zone....

Because the validation tool that downloaded from the validation website is
an old, outdated version. I had to go to the WU to get the correct version
then go back to the validation website to get validated and test if I could
download....

Hi
You don't have to the Update page. Any MS download will initiate the
Validation.

Visit it and let it scan for updates and it should prompt you to install the

Interesting, MS has picked new servers (in new subnets) for V6 of
Windows update. that means that all the firewall rules we setup to allow
unfiltered HTTP access to the old subnets are not going to work with the
new IP ranges of the update servers. It would be nice if MS published a
list of the IP ranges for the update servers so that people that use
real firewalls could set them up properly.

Now that I have the update site working, I have to enter new exceptions
for the download of the files - another change to the IP range they
use...

Now that I've done the update on the firewall, selecting Custom again
gives me a new set of subnets to add.... In all, I had to add 5 /24
subnets to the exception list to get all the windows updates to work.

Just use windows 98 & me to download. I read somewhere they can
still download have not tested it.

If you use firefox, each time you have the download the .exe file to
verify you have a legal windows installation. My system has a
preinstalled key. Which is different from the key on the back of the
machine. Those preinstalled key by the manufacture are going to
cause problems.

Microsoft ought to make a note, not to use the preinstalled key.

What happens if one those machines have a legal preinstalled are
detected as a pirated computer and they don't have a disk?

Hi

There's something wrong with your system!!

I just updated 2 computers with the new validation tool software
with no problems. Went to windows update, it checked my system then
popped up with express install, or custom install, I clicked express
away it went.

LOL! If you think that people won't have problems with it, then you are
just deluding yourself.

As with all technologies that are useless to the end user, it is bound
to screw up. It happens with Product Activation every day, and it will
happen with validation.
