Genuine Disadvantage

The Genuine Advantage application download loaded by my Windows update has
proved to be a genuine disadvantage in my case. I've got an OEM version of
windows and the product activation links won't recognise the product or
license info.
This means I get pestered with messages regarding my copy of windows not
being genuine and so forth, plus the 'resolve' links appear to exclude my
windows info, Microsoft tech support by phone gives appearance of being
inundated with Q's regarding this new feature. I'll try tomorrow to get
support on this issue, but I'd be interested to know if any others in similar
position?

Thanks

Check that the actual product key used for installing your Windows XP
agress with the one on your OEM license sticker.

To see the installation key download Magic Jelly Bean from

Good luck

Hi cbweb
Most posts have been by those caught with their trousers down - you have not
indicated if you know for certain your OEM is genuine.
There may have been one who affirmed their WinXP was genuine. You would
need to search in the groups to find out.
Hope you get a positive result.

FWIW, very few people in my experience have such problems when
they have a genuine and valid license with the accompanying COA.

You told us what you have, but not whether or not you know it's a
legitimate copy of the software. You need to call your OEM
place, not just bellyache about it to Microsoft, who have nothing
to do with your situation.
If it's OEM, Microsoft won't help you: It's the OEMers
responsibility to keep you in good shape becuase the OEMs can
make changes, etc. to it, and Microsoft won't support those. If
your OEM software was ever legally or illegally activiated on a
different machine, it will never work on yours. Or rather, it
will work as you are describing; if you're lucky.

Personally, I use DiamondCS ProcessGuard to regulate what can load into
memory, and I have it block wgatray.exe. It attempts to load twice on
Windows startup (as noted when I prompted to allow rather than just
block it). The ActiveX control used by the Windows Update site doesn't
use it so you can still authenticate at that time to get updates.
