Hi, Andy
That process is indeed generic, it is not uncommon to see many instances of
it running in Task Manager. Your firewall must also always and without
exception allow it to use internet or you will loose your dynamically
assigned IP address and in general internet will jsut not work. This
(svchost.exe) process provides generic services for hosting other programs
requirements (usage of Dynamic Link Libraries, actually). The first problem
is to identify what the service that is failing is actually hosting. Event
Viewer might give some clues; clear its 3 report areas, reproduce the error,
and then peek at the reports that EV generates. Do you see anything unusual
that indicates some problem exists?

Please create a system restoration point before doing the next step (just in
case). Better safe than sorry!

That link can help you with the identify issue. Do NOT dismiss the error
message or the associated entry will then immediately be removed from the
registry! You can usually highlight and export that key (and view it later
with notepad, just don't double click the resultant .reg type file or it
will want to put it back into the registry -- deny that permission! Rename
the export created file to have a .txt extension instead of .reg extension.)

Also, you are not providing enough information regarding the exact
conditions on how you generate the error. By trying to create a new
connection, or by trying to use an existing defined connection, before or
after a connection has been established, and so on. Please provide detailed
information on the exact steps needed to reproduce the error.
