Garbled title bar

Michael Woodward

Hi,

My Windows XP installation is somehow corrupted, and I
can't find any information in the Knowledgebase about the
problem.

The title bar on most Word documents, IE windows, and
Outlook messages (which uses Word as editor) displays
either a bunch of garbage characters or, in the case of
IE, only the first letter of the full title. For example,
this window where I'm typing is titled "M". The page
named Community Newsgroup is titled "C".

I created a new Word document, and the title bar usually
displays a bunch of non-character square symbols. Same
problem with Outlook messages.

Anybody else ever run across this?? I can provide screen
shots if necessary to illustrate my problem.

Thanks
Michael

Hi

Have you tried a System Restore back to a point to before your problem started? If so, what was the outcome?

Well, I'm not exactly sure when it started happening. A
few weeks ago I completely reformatted my hard drive,
then installed XP for the first time. Before I loaded any
applications, I believe it was working fine. I didn't
notice the problem until after I had loaded Office XP and
several other applications, so it's difficult to pinpoint
the exact moment in time it was broken. I have tried
Detect and Repair as well as installing all of the
available service packs and patches for Windows and
Office.

It's very weird; I haven't run across this problem ever
before! Any thoughts anyone might have would be
appreciated.

Hi Michael

Is it possible for you to email me a screenshot of the garbled characters?

Hi, Will

I am adding something to Michael post because I have a
similar problem.

XP was working fine and has been for more than a year.
Yesterday I turned on the computer and all of the words
are now characters (like the old Wingdings font). The
icon on the desktop are still were they should be but
their test is all characters. Same for the menu bar. A
few programs do display the readable text but most do not.

It looks to me like the default screen font has somehow
been changed.

Does anybody know how to change it back with re-installing
XP?

Thanks for you help.
