Games on Vista...

Hi,

Have any of you tryed installing a lot of games that you may have had on XP?
As I think Vista takes up a bit more CPU and RAM than XP does and wondering
if you have noticed any slow-down within the games that you may not have
experienced on XP ?

I only install the odd game mainly cos I play PS2 or X-Box lol
cheers,

Vista code still contains debugging code and is not optimized, so
comparision with XP is not very useful. Games have been doing well for me
but I am not an action gamer. Some games have been inconsistent from build
to build.

I actually find that Oblivion is faster on Vista 64....though this machine
is faster than my XP machine I was using.

The Windows desktop does take RAM, but they seem to unload it from memory to
give more to the games. At the end of a long gaming session, I used to come
out to the "Aurora screen" while it said it was preparing my desktop.
I now have more Ram, so have not seen that screen lately.

For those games that are written for x64, yes. The improvement for 32bit
games is slight but it is there. There are enough games that don't run on
x64 that you probably should stick with x86 for gaming for now.

Madden 2005 is awesome on X64

Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, Battlefield 2, Doom 3, Civilization 4
and Quake 4 all load and play fine here. All have latest updates. Half
Life 2 and Doom 3 even put themselves in the Windows Games folder.

I've installed the 32bit version, and it runs fine. But I only had time to
install two games on it so far (Battlefield 1942 and Far-Cry) and they both
give me issues. The major issue is that my game profile settings don't get
saved. Everytime I reload the game, my settings are back to default. Both
games are patched to their latest version.

Sorry for my last post not showing up. Wrong click at the wrong time... =(

What I was wanting to say was that my only issue so far is with my user
profile settings. I only installed two games SO FAR on Vista Beta2 32bit,
these games are battlefield 1942 and FarCry just for testing. The major issue
that I am getting is that all my game profile settings are not being saved.
Everytime I set up the controls, video, audio, etc. settings, they are not
being saved. When I start the game again, the settings are back to default.

Vista is installed on a fresh hard-drive and I have not installed anything
else on it other that drivers and these two games.

That is probably because you are not running it with administrator
privilieges. Right-click your game exe and select "Run as administrator" and
the settings should now be saved if you wish so. If you dont want to
right-click the exe all the time, you can go into properties on the EXE file
and press the Compatability tab and check the "Run this program as an
administrator".

I've tested Call of Duty 2 and Guild wars so far. Guild wars got a major FPS
boost which I loved, 20-30 minutes later, the game locks up the entire PC and
I have to hard-reboot the whole system though (ATI drivers = crap?). Call of
duty 2 got some FPS boost as well but I experienced some minor 'stuttering'
sometimes, not that much of a problem though.
