Function key F9 won't update fields. Why?

In a Word doc with a Table of Contents I know of two ways to regenerate the
TOC:

1) Press Ctrl-A to select all text, then press F9.

2) Click an insert point anywhere in the TOC and press F9.

Well, I created a new Word template for someone and, for some reason, method
#1 doesn't work. Method #2 works fine.

When I press Ctrl-A, all the text highlights like normal. Then, when I press
F9, nothing happens. No response at all.

I tried opening up one of my other templates and doing the same test. When I
press F9, I get the little pop-up asking if I want to regenerate the whole
TOC or just the page numbers (which is normal behavior).

This concerns me. I must have accidentally set something wrong in the new
template. Can anyone give me a clue? Thanks.

Press Ctrl+Alt+[plus sign on numeric pad], this turns the pointer into a
cloverleaf. Next, press F9. This should start the Customized Keyboard dialog
with the assigned command highlighted. Does it say UpdateFields?

If not, and if F9 is assigned to something else, then click on F9 in the
Current Keys box, then click Remove. This should restore F9's default
assignment.

If F9 doesn't apppear to be assigned to anything, choose Tools - Customize -
Keyboard, set Category to All Commands, set Commands to UpdateFields, in
Press new... tap the F9 key, then click Assign.

Confirmed. One of the graphics was the cause. I recreated the graphic in a
known format. Once inserted, F9 started working normally.

I did what you said (Ctrl Alt Plus). Got the cloverleaf. Pressed F9 and it
says it's assigned to Updated Fields. Tried doing Ctrl-A and F9 again and it
still doesn't work.

I've done more troubleshooting and I've discovered some more symptoms. The
TOC is on page 2 of the document. The title page (page 1) contains two
graphics (company logos and such). One of these two graphics seems to be the
cause. If that graphic is included in any selection of text, the F9 key
doesn't work. If I select all text except that graphic, F9 works. If I
delete this graphic then do Ctrl-A and F9, it works fine.

So I this graphic is somehow the cause. I inherited this from somewhere
else. If I recreate the graphic in a known formate, I expect it will work.

Well... it's nice to know that F9 wasn't really broken.
