XP Home (on a dual-boot with Linux laptop)
1) I'm a UNIX person; I do almost everything from command lines. Using
XP's built-in FTP from a command prompt I continually run into something
that defies explanation--at least in the *ix world: it just stops
working. Example: I've written batch files to automate the entire
process of firing up FTP, connecting to my domain, logging in with my
user name and password, and changing all the settings (such as verbose
off) to my liking. Whether I use these batch files -or- manually (i.e.,
ftp ftp.mydomain.com or ftp mydomain.com) connect to my domain (or ANY
domain), approximately 75% of the time NOTHING happens. It may (or may
not) connect to the domain but that's as far as it goes; it just hangs
there with absolutely no bytes sent or received. However, when using
FTP from the Linux side, this SAME laptop, connected to the same
Internet connection with the same NIC, works 100% of the time. If
you're asking why I don't simply always use the Linux side, it's because
there's one specific Windows graphics program I use that creates the
files I need to upload, and switching back and forth would be ridiculous.
2) How the hell do I GET RID of that annoying IE icon on my desktop
toolbar?! I don't use IE, I have never used IE, and I will never use
IE. (Mozilla and Firefox blow IE out of the water.) I've attempted to
get rid of that icon but to no avail.
Thanks!
