FrontPage publishing issues

G

Guest

Hi! I am a first time FrontPage user and am having the hardest time
publishing the website I designed to the FTP server. When I publish, some
aspects of the page are there and some are not, mostly pictures and buttons.
I have tried changing the file path in FrontPage to represent where the
picture will be when the page is published, and that still isn't working. I
am getting to frustrated looking through the code trying to find the
problems. Is there an eaiser way to get the page to publish to the web and
look like the one I designed on FrontPage?

I have no clue what half the stuff you just said means. When I go into the
coding on the server, the pictures file path is there, but it still shows the
frontpage file path. Then, I go in and change the path within the coding and
some will change and some wont.

Please remember, this is my fiirst time creating anything in FrontPage and I
am still very clueless on the terminology.

For one thing, your site has FP server extensions install, and you must http
publish, not ftp.

Also, when you are working on your local web before publishing, do you
actually have a FP web created and open before you start working on it?

Also, are you File | Importing the images from your hard drive location into
a folder in your open FP web before inserting on a page and saving?

The home page was create with PageMill (or is http://www.rmirailworks.com/ a
different web?)...so I'm gonna guess that you're trying to edit individual
(loose) pages with FrontPage.

A lot of your images are referencing files on your local drive.

You have to open your local website (the one on your machine) with
FrontPage, edit it, then Publish to the remote server - Open FP, File | Open
Site. To Publish via http: File | Publish Web (or Site depending on which
version of FP)

Images need to be Imported into this website first then placed within the
web design ( File | Import)

In addition do not use spaces (they will appear as %20) in file names and
stick to lowercase as well - failing to do so may lead to broken links.

Were you able to maybe review the video that shows you how to make sure you
are working in a Frontpage web and not a folder?

Looking the at the URL you posted:
http://www.railandtrack.com/Home_Page2.gif is an image that does not come up.
But you have this image here:
http://www.railandtrack.com/images/Home_Page2.gif in your images folder. You
need to go into the coding and just correct it.

If you are trying to rely on Frontpage to help you keep the paths correct,
make sure the folder has a Globe on it to indicate a Frontpage web

Which part of Tom's response is unclear?

Tom is saying that to resolve your problem you need to publish the site
using HTTP, not FTP. Open the web in FrontPage and choose File, Publish
Site and choose the HTTP method. This will ensure that all files are
published.

For images, if you don't import them into the web first you'll have broken
links - links pointing to files on your hard drive rather than files in the
web site and they won't appear.

How do I publish using HTTP instead of FTP? I was told by Earthlink to use
the FTP so that is what I did.

I watched a couple fo the videos, but they didn't tell me much I hadn't
already done. Is there one you recommend?

If your web site has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed then you
shouldn't be using FTP. FTP can corrupt the extensions and potentially
cause other problems, like the ones you're having.

Open your web in FrontPage and Choose File, Publish Site. Click on Remote
Web Site properties and choose FrontPage or SharePoint Services (the first
option). That's HTTP. For web site location put in
http://www.yourdomain.com (your web site) and click Publish. If the
FrontPage Extensions are corrupt you'll have to get your ISP to repair them.

I opened one of the pages in Frontpage and click file but Publish Site is not
a valid option. It is shaded out when you try to select it.

When I started, I opened Frontpage, clicked on new, saved the page as
index.htm and added a new page for each page to link to. Is this not the
right way?
