Win XP (Home) SP3
Intel® DQ45CB Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93GHz 3M 1066 Processor
4GB DDR2 PC6400 800MHz Dual Channel
500GB 7200RPM 3G SATA II Hard Drive
Integrated Intel GMA 4500 Graphics

I bought a new computer and installed my Win XP (Home) SP3 on it so I can continue to use my beloved, dated graphics software. My main problem is with FrontPage 2000, which is bundled/installed with Office 2000. The options listed for a custom install are few:
Tutorial
Help
Samples
Server Extensions Resource Kit (marked "X"/Not Available by default)
Server Extensions Admin Forms (marked "X"/Not Available by default)
Additional Themes

The install goes OK, except that it stops near the end to say:
"Unable to access configuration for Microsoft professional web server."
(my understanding is that XP does not support a web server)
I click OK and get "Completed successfully."

When I start FP and try to "Open Web" (eg) http://www.whatever.org/ I get this:
"The folder 'http://www.whatever.org/' isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password."
Unfortunately, it does not provide me with the popup to enter my password.

Additionally, when I open a **disk-based web** and attempt to Publish it to (eg) www.thingamajig-etc.com I get this:
"Could not find a web server 'www.thingamajig-etc.com' on port 80. Make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly."

This is driving me nuts because I have FrontPage 2000 **functioning fully** on my old, decrepit Win XP pc and have compared all the settings I can think of and they are the same as the new install. My install on the old pc was about done 4 months ago after doing a clean install of XP. I don't remember there being any problems with FP at that time.

Thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank,

Are you using the latest Office 2000 service pack? It may be that you need to update it to work with XP SP3:

Here's a link to obtain it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276367

Out of interest, did the graphics application not work with the OS on your old PC (Windows 7, I guess)? The reason I ask is that XP won't make the most of those specifications (or be able to use the full 4GB ram) unless you are using the uncommon x64 XP version. Most apps will work in Windows 7 with a little tweaking :).

Hi Ian,
Not sure about latest Office Update. Following your link, I eventually came to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD010225771033.aspx, a dizzying page of security fixes. Is this what you meant? I don't know where to begin.

The aps that I most want to continue to use - and which are not cited as Win7 compatible - are Photoshop 7 (bought recently), PaintShopPro 5 (no longer supported/made) and FrontPage 2000. How would one tweak these aps?

A new problem has arisen that may be FP related, but prolly deserves another thread. May start that later. Thanks for your interest.
