Front USB ports not recognizing Rio MP3 player on A7N8X non deluxe

I have a new Rio Nitrus MP3 player. When I plug in into the front USB ports, I get an error in XP saying the USB device is not recognized. If I use the USB ports mounted on the back of the motherboard, they detect it just fine.

Anyone have any ideas why this is??

also, I can use the front USB ports with any of my other USB devices. Mouse, joystick, gamepad and scanner.

They are all detected and work fine

Is the Rio USB2 or USB 1 ?
Are all the others USB 2 or USB 1?
Do you have Windows XP and SP1 installed?
If not then you have no USB2

"USB devices. Mouse, joystick, gamepad and scanner."
Are all those USB 2.0 or are they all USB1.1, or are they mixed?
are the front usb ports connected to the motherboard header correctly?
All ten wires, all 8?
9?

answers to your questions

Antec Case
Using 8 wires, the 9th didn't need to be connected
the RIO is USB 2.0
1.1 and 2.0 is enabled in the BIOS
XP Pro w/SP1 and all updates
All other devices are 1.1

Is it possible that the header that the front USB ports are plugged into is
not USB 2.0??

Could be, but I still got USB 1.1 speeds out of my front ports with no
errors except WinXP would pop up a dialog when I would plug in my Archos
20GB MP3 Recorder (USB 2.0/1.1 device) and say something like, "High
Speed device connected to slow port".

I called ANTEC 1-800# and they sent me a new front USB/Firewire part for
my Antec SX-1040BII, I replaced it and now my USB 2.0 devices all work
at full speed from the front ports.

I have the same problem with A7M266-D, it appears the front panel usb header
does not supply enough power to run my RIO-500. The computer either reboots
or does not recognize the RIO. The rear panel works o.k. and a powered hub
on the front works o.k. I read somewhere that selecting a different source
of power for the USB +5 can make a difference. Try setting the jumper to
+5VSB instead of the default +5.

Front ports are USB2.0 or USB1.1 .
There is no such thing as USB2.0 or USB1.1 only ports
Connected to that board they are USB2.0 or 1.1 depending on bios settings.
I had a 1 non working and a 1 working front USB port on my Antec SLK3700BQE
case.
The contacts in one port were bent up and so there was part contact.
Antec sent me a replacement front port board and that fixed it.

It's not a case of the front port header not supplying enough power because
that is common problem on a few boards.
To prove or dispove that all you have to do is reconnect the rear ports (on
the plate)to the header instead of front ports(after all, that is where they
connect to if you do not have front ones.
Then plug the Rio in and see if it still happens.
If it works ok like that(it should not as it is connected to the same header
as the front ports were)then something is up with the front ones.
Has that been tried?
Not the four onboard ports, the two on the plate(when connected to the
header)

1.unplug all other things that use USB
2.Reconnect the two USB ports on the plate to the usb header.
3.Plug the Rio into each port in turn, ending with the two on the
plate(bracket)
4.If it worked in those(on plate), unplug, reconnect the front ports to the
header, plug in the Rio (try each front port).
5.If it works then leave it in, connect all the other USB items and then see
what happens.

Not enough current could also be the problem if you have a lot of other
things connected.
Also make sure the power management box is not checked(ticked)in the USB hub
settings.

all of the other items I mentioned are only plugged in when used. I don't
have anything I leave plugged in

Front ports are USB2.0 or USB1.1 .

Yes, as long as the BIOS/Mobo supports 2.0. USB 2.0 is forward and
backward compatible with USB 1.1. A 1.1 device plugged into a 2.0 socket
will work but only at 1.1 speed.
There is no such thing as USB2.0 or USB1.1 only ports

I never said they were, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't
something wrong with the way Antec originally designed their front USB
port modules, the only difference I can see is it looks like they
changed a few capacitor values on the newer modules, other then that
they seem to be identical.

I found my set of USB ports for the expansion slot and plugged them into the
header the front ports were using and it works fine.

Guess I need to contact Antec and see if I can get a new set of ports for
the case.

That's what I had to do.
Mine were messed up(contacts not making contact for each one).
The problem could be the ports, could be the wires to them, could be the
small board, or all of those.
Trouble is Antec has two or three different types of wires to those front
ports.
In my manual(for case) it says ribbon cable, on my usb front ports it is the
twin cable with 8 wires to one connector(as on the connector for the rear
ports on the plate).
My case is the SLK3700BQE.
