Freezing problems NOT fixed on RC2!

I'm running the WV RC2 64-bit on an Athlon 64 3000+, 768 RAM, GeForce 6600
256 RAM, MB Asus A8N-SLI deluxe, and I'm sadly realizing that the freezing
poblems have NOT been fixed!

Very frustrating... I disabled the hard disk write cashing, as suggested by
Mufaddal on this forum, disconnected all the usb devices (except keyboard and
mouse), kept the system very clean (except for Vista compatible Pc-Cillin
version), but it freezes!

It's still freezing and crashing after few minutes of working, with no
apparent reason, forcing me to re-install the OS for the 4th time now! Yes,
because after few re-bootings, the file system corrupts and I have to do a
fresh installation...

RC2 too is totally UNSTABLE on my PC... what a sad discovery... I'm aware
that the release candidate of a software is not a definitive version, but I'm
also convinced that the major problems, such as these described above, should
have fixed long before... In other words I expected little bugs and
compatibility problems, not radical crisis of the entire system!!

I don't know what will expect to us...

You may have posted the details already, but have you done the basics? I have
RC2 on an ASUS A8N-E with no issues, but the rest of my system is
significantly different.

* make sure the motherboard is flashed to the latest bios
* make sure the video drivers are not your issue
* try running without virus protection for a short time (and surf carefully :)

The only trouble I've had with vista so far is when I tried pc-cillin, so as
the other poster recommended, change that and see what your results are. The
good news is that I expect your configuration to be similar to many folks out
there and there hasn't been an avalanch of reports of issues in this forum.

Good luck!

And if you install Vista cleanly and run without installing pc-cillin or any
other software, does it still freeze?

Thank you very much for your suggestions, PNutts... On my fresh-installed
system I didn't install Pc-Cillin. I will keep my PC switched on all the
night long. If tomorrow morning it will be up and running, so my issue is the
antivirus. Otherwise I will check for BIOS updates. As for the video drivers,
I installed the latest 96.33 nvidia Vista drivers, even if I saw that WV
default drivers are the 96.77!

I'll let you know... Thank you again.

A fellow newsgrouper posted this, I hope it helps.

I've managed to fix my power off and reboot problem.

Others have said they're having the same problem.

If you've got a Via Sata Raid controller, download the Via Raid 530c drivers
from somewhere like

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/Other-DRIVERS-TOOLS/Others/VIA-RAID-530c.shtml

Right click on the downloaded file and select `Extract all`

Go into the extracted directory and right click on SETUP and run as
administrator.

Click on allow to whatever messages appear. Then the PC will want to reboot.
This will hang as usual.

Once you've re-set your PC and booted it, go into `Device Drivers` `Storage
Controllers` `Via SATA Raid controller` and click on the driver tab. Click
on
`Update Driver`

then `Browse my computer for Driver software`

then `Let me pick a list of device drivers on my computer`

then `have disk`

Browse to `Wherever you extracted your 5.30 drivers
to`\drvdisk\AMD64\2003x64

and select VIAMRX64

Click on Next etc to install this, your PC will then want to reboot. I cant
remember whether it rebooted fine at this point or not. But once it's
rebooted, it finds a new device, installs automatically and now my PC
reboots
and powers off fine.

Note, if you don't follow the above instructions to manually pick the
driver, it tells you (well it told me) that a suitable driver was already
installed.

Thank you very much for your help... Yesterday I did the test with the clear
installation of VW RC2 *without* PC-Cillin, but I got the same result. So,
it's not the antivirus software my issue.

Right now I'm trying to update my BIOS, but I'm realizing that WV doesn't
allow to make a bootable MS-DOS disk! Nor it allows to boot the system in DOS
mode! I believe it's a definitive evolution from the MS-DOS legacy, but quite
a limit to update the BIOS (considering, also, that Windows update programs
don't work WV).

I will certainly try the Bill Fresbee solution, since I have a Sata Raid
Controller.

Let you know!

CIAO!

Problem solved, finally! It was the BIOS of my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe! I did the
upgrade and now things go very smoothly... no more sudden freezings or
lock-ups! Now I can start evaluating WV.

Thank you all for your kind help!

Glad everything is working.

Let us know how it goes!

Most of the time when people encounter weird stuff, its amazing what gets
fixed when you upgrade your BIOS. Unfortunately one of my motherboards was
discontinued in 2004 and I'm too cheap to get a new one!
