Freezing every hour or so

What could be causing my computer to keep slowing down
and freezing? It takes about an hour or so for it to
happen. Then I have to perform a hard shut off.

For the computer to work well again without freezing in a
shorter amount of time it has to be kept off for a few
hours.

It also occasionally shuts itself off out of the blue.

I've been trying to do a virus scan and haven't been able
to complete one because of this. It did find a couple
and deleted them, but they didn't seeem to be the problem.

First you have to make sure you don't have a virus of some
sort - particularly since you say that you did have a
couple. Update your virus program and make sure you're
clean.

Google search Ad-Aware and Spybot for free protection and
use these programs daily. Have you downloaded and
installed the available Windows updates? Do you have an
active firewall? If not try Zone Alarm (via Google).

Accumulated heat
Check the ventilation fans on the chassis, cooling fans on the CPU , power pack and the vedio card
Using a can of compressed air to blow out those dust and dirts on the cooling fans and heatsinks may be helpful
