Amazing! With all the programs mentioned, Irfanview isn't on their
list. WHERE have those people been hiding?

Personally, I'm somewhat ambivalent about Irfanview.

It's bursting with all sorts of capabilities, features and functions.
For that reason it is a great freeware program. It can often be reliaed
upon to do things well which usually only more specialized programs can
do.

However I find the user interaction can be more clumsy than I would
like.

Maybe this reflects the way Irfanview has grown by acquiring large
chunks of functionality but it does mean I often don't select Irfanview
first.

Depending on how an individual user actually uses a program, the
'cripple' may be either insignificant, or 'hopeless'. If the crippling
is in the area a user really wants to use, then for him, it is
'hopelessly crippled', while another may not ever want to use that feature.
It's all in the user's perception, and needs.

Exactly so.
Hence my earlier comment to jon that "it's horses for courses".

By your logic all software programs are crippled since there is no
software on the market - payware or freeware -with features and
capabilities that satisfy *everyone*. The word crippled should not be
used lightly in acf.

A crippled program is one that has been rigged to not do its advertised
duty. Examples are programs that prevent output by disabling the Print
menu. Or a program that places watermarks on the output to make it
unusable. There are lesser degrees of crippling. Discussing and making
value judgements on such shortcomings is what acf is all about.

Cribbed from another thread, here are the freeware digital photo editors.
Did we miss any?

OFTEN RECOMMENDED
http://www.gimp.org/ (The Gimp, functional editor)
http://www.irfanview.com/ (Irfanview, fast viewer)
http://www.getpaint.net/ (Paint.Net, functional MS Paint replacement)

SOMETIMES RECOMMENDED
http://www.xnview.com/ (XnView, fast viewer on Mac & Linux too)
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm (Faststone, image viewer)
http://picasa.google.com/ (Picasa, what is it's claim to fame?)
http://photoscape.en.softonic.com/ (Photoscape, functional editor)

NOT RECOMMENDED
http://www.snapfire.com/ (Snapfire, suspect Corel bait-n-switchware)

Here's a little program that I wrote for myself. It isn't a full blow
commercial product
but I have fun manipulating pictures with it. I hope some folks will try it
and comment here.
No install needed. It's a stand alone program that doesn't touch anything in
your computer files or registry.
Windows XP is the only system I've run it on. I'm not a photographer, just
an old codger now retired who
knows how to push bits around in a computer.
You can run and download it from this link:

Since I have been using it since the very early versions, it is rather
like a comfortable old chair to me. The interface is deceptively
simple, which I consider a plus feature. Best feature is its extensive
batch capability, and the instant loading.

I'm not I think it sucks.

Everyone has his own needs, and opinions, and ways of working. If
Irfanview doesn't suit your style, then, for you, it sucks. What DO you
like?

making frequent and outrageous claims for what are essentially
rebadged source-code examples, and spamming forums with product
releases and announcements.
It is known that A.A. Fussy spends a singular amount of effort hyping
Babya's products, and the 'company' has certainly produced a large
number of software items in the past few years, but it is entirely
unclear as to whether he is completely deluded as to the quality of
these products and his press releases are the result of an
exceptionally fevered imagination, or whether the entirety of Babya
Software is an elaborate joke. However it is clear that A.A. Fussy
intends to continue the promotion of his products, going so far as to
hijack Wikipedia itself in the ongoing hype.
It has been suggested in many quarters that the A.A. Fussy entity is
in fact a satirical creation by an unknown individual, the entire
Babya line being a long running joke aimed at computer users,
particularly those in the open source community."

And you have definitive proof for any of this. By the tone of the
submission about...I think not. He is doing no harm, and not trashing
anyone. His reference to the busy icon manager/editor was a good program,
though I have found better. He has as much right to post here with
unjustified assaults as anyone. His behavior is better than yours or mine.

Yeah right, like accusing Susan of being a cult leader months back.

Exactly what she is. I suppose one could use another term to describe our
little "point person" and her minions. Pricelessware under her guidance
has created such a group of nasty followers who aggressively attempt to
protect the garnered turf of ACF from which they perform website business
and falsly claim that the listings are from ACF participants. This is
dishonestly false, as it is compiled by Pricelessware participants making
much noise by doing so in the ACF forum. It is an attempt to hijack a
newsgroup forum in the name of a website and bully it's way within to keep
the ground.

No, it was you who had the agenda to hijack acf to promote *your*
freeware website.

Your starting to sound like delusional scientologist.

Bull crap and you know it. If you look closely at what you are saying,
look at my behavior with my website and look at Susans with
Pricelessware...you become a hypocrite.
