Hello,
i'm looking for program that can replace Total Commander.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Gyula's Navigator

Link I have is here:
http://www.zentek-international.com/mirrors/tucows/preview/195761.html

Has the 2 pane view and lots of options at the bottom via PF keys. I usually
use it when I'm moving quite a few files.

Others: 2xExplorer and Turbo (not the ad-ware version), Power Desk and A43
are all good. I have a whole bunch of these for different purposes. Even
have the old 'winfile.exe' which appears to now recognize long file names. I
just discovered in the the Windows folder (I have xp home).

To select files in Gyula you need to use both hands, to ctrl-click etc..
Selection works much better in TC, where I can use the right mouse button
for selection of one or a hundred files, by clicking on one or moving over
the files with the right button depressed.

If I depress the right button for more than a second on a file I get the
context menu as in Gyula Navigator.

So the author of TC has solved this problem in a very good way.
The Gyula developers could learn that from TC.

Guess i'm not too picky, then.

You may simply have another body position when you use your computer, so it
is no problem for you to use both hands.

I have my mouse and keyboard beside me, so it is not practical to use both
hands. I write texts with only one hand too, not a good way to handle a
keyboard actually, but I have learned to use it like that.

Gyula seems to be a nice file manager, very similar to TC but TC has a lot
more features.
I didn't see any color coding of file types in Gyula, for example.

I like to see what kind of files there are in a directory with a quick
glance, so I have txt files colored green, html files are purple, exe files
are red, etc..
It makes it easier to find a certain file too.

I think you mean 'Dependency walker' (a very nice app by the way).
<http://www.dependencywalker.com/>

And it's better if you start xplorer2 from DW as it allow you to
ignore some errors but it's not a requirement, you can check the text
file 'Alpha.txt' for more specific details.

xplorer2 is a *debug* release meant to be used by people willing to
give Nikos a lot of feedback about bugs/features so we can
(eventually) get a version stable enough to be labelled 'Beta' (and
from there to stable release builds) and that fact is *clearly*
stated in the readme file, about box and its homepage. :)

And is faster than the current version of xplorer2 but the big
downside now with 2xExplorer is that it's not being developed
anymore, all the new features are only for xplorer2.

Regards

The only gripe I have with the excellent 2X I have used for years is-
the sort selections in each view pane loose settings, I frequently have
to reset. Nikos never sees that, so it doesn't get fixed.

I won't bother trying X2 until it runs by itself in W98, not with other
helper programs to start it.

Looks a bit like TC but does not come anywhere near it in terms of
features and versatility. Just use and compare the two.
I use GyNav on an all freeware (except the OS) pc of a charity I work
for as a volunteer, because we prefer to spend the little money we
have on the people we try to help.

It is possible that "gentoo" is what you are looking for. I haven't
yet tried it but it seems to be a two pane, Xwindows file manager
somewhat along the lines of WS_FTP or the DOS program Stereo Shell. It
is released under the GPL so is free for all users. I do not know
Total Commander so cannot comment on similarities to that program.

I use xplorer2 0.0.0.57 as my file manager and am very happy with it.
It has features I doubt you'd find anywhere else.

Well, maybe not as freeware but TC has many features you will not
find anywhere else. The last version (6.0) has tabs and supports regex
expressions in search files.
It would be too long to give a complete list but I've tested more than
10 file managers and no one beats TC.
Something important for me, TC keeps the settings in a .ini file, all
other programs (freeware are not) write hundred of keys in the
registry, which is a shame. MS pollutes the registry with all their
bloated software so when I find a program which saves settings in a
file, I'm very happy.
But of course, this is not the reason why I use this tool, it's the
only shareware I have BTW, all other programs are freeware.

XNView integrates very nicely with TC, as an alternative to Irfanview, to
show pictures in one of the panels. Ctrl-Q turns this image view off and
on.
.....

The best freeware replacement I have found for TC is xplorer2, the new file
manager from the 2xExplorer author.

http://www.ps.ic.ac.uk/~umeca74/x2alpha.zip

When I am using xplorer2 I just have to remember that clicking on a zip
file does not open it like a folder, as in TC, instead it unpacks it.

There is also a fast text editor from the same author,
editor2 at http://www.netez.com/2xExplorer

He creates very fast and small high quality programs.
......

After studying the situation in the linux world I don't worry anymore,
there are many file manager projects going on, and most of them are aiming
at producing a file manager as TC-like as possible.

Gyula seems to be a nice file manager, very similar to TC but TC has a lot
more features.

Right!

Some key features of Total Commander file manager:

- Keyboard functions similar to the DOS original.
- Supports Drag & Drop with the mouse, including to the print manager.
- Extended copying, moving, renaming and deleting of entire trees
(Enables deleting "full" directories).
- Archives are handled like subdirectories. You can easily copy files
to and from archives. The appropriate archiving program is
automatically called. pkzip, arj, lha, rar, uc2 and ace are all
supported.
- Start-menu (User-defined commands) to place your frequently used DOS
or Windows programs into a drop-down menu. The actual directory and/or
the file under the cursor can be delivered to the application.
- Command line for the simple starting of programs with parameters,
simply by typing the program name or by pressing CTRL+ENTER or
CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
- Enhanced search function with full text search in any files across
multiple drives.
- Built in file viewer (F3) to view files of ANY SIZE in hex, binary
or text format, using either the ASCII- (DOS) or the ANSI- (Windows)
character set. The line width and font size can now be changed.
- Internal Unzip by Info-Zip, which allows unzipping without calling
an external program! The source code in Turbo-Pascal is free and can
be obtained directly from the author.
- Configurable button bar to start external programs or internal menu
commands.
- Configurable main menu.
- Internal unpackers for ZIP, ARJ, LZH, GZ, TAR, RAR and ACE formats.
- Internal ZIP packer
- FTP

Please note, these are only a few key features! TC can replace a whole
host of separate programs. Unfortunately there is no freeware program
like it.

Speaking of....you can get a LFN aware copy of WinFile.exe (aka File
manager) file version 4.0.1371.1 from WinNT 4.0 SP4,
D/L link in line 71, right column,on:

I sure wish I could have one for w98. I use winfile (SFN). Not for any copy
etc operations of course. It is handy for taking a quick glance at those
things Windows likes to hide. I like it for viewing sneaky desktop.inis and
clearing the System attrib. The main situation that I've recurrently found
it convenient is the Fonts folder. It is honest with me about what is a file
and what is a link. It seems every time I've relocated font files, Windows
wigged out about it. Each time, it took Winfile, providing true access, not
honoring virtual folder games, for me to straighten things out.

Has there ever been another file manager, GUI, that is independent? The
way Winfile is? Works only with real files, not engaging in the virtual
folder eye tricks?

Have you tried the above NT version with W98? No go?

For the 16-bit SNF version you might want to try the
ini- directive explained in
"Using WINFILE.INI's LongFileNames= Setting
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=86993>

in the WINFILE.INI file's
[SETTINGS] section:
longfilenames=1

above directive does not exist, must be added.
Don't know if it will work, only one way to find out I guess :)

All the best,

I tried it, and it doesn't work, it needs the NT-XP version of shell32.dll

Yes, no loss in trying. Article says, "You can rename a short filename
to a longer filename." Tested, but no. After I typed a long-digit name
(spaces were refused) Winfile spat back an allcaps SFN-SFN. After reading
the article a couple of times, I've decided the key thing is that it is
talking only about a problem viewing cross network in w3x when using
a particular LAN Mangager driver. Oh, well.

Btw, opening Winfile right now, I've recalled one of those other little
things it can be used for. Reading contents from the recycle bin: launching
the file in associated app, without "restoring" it to original location.
One of those little things you get when having a supp program that ignores
virtual stuff.

Q: Did MSFT ever return the reset System attrib command to its later
versions of Explorer? It existed in Winfile, then was most annoyingly
removed in w9x. I know third-party file manager programs tend to have
it, but am wondering what route MSFT took there.
